As Lallek and Jace headed back to the Forrest; they do not immediately notice any of the fierce white birds. They do however immediately notice that several fresh drops of blood are on the ground. A few splashes are on nearby leaves. Something hurt passed by this way...

Happy to be back in the forest, Lallek grimaces at the blood. Whatever it was, he didn't care. That wasn't a concern now. Pulling out his pad, he writes to Jace. "Let's take to the trees. If those tributes try to track us they won't be able to follow footprints through the trees. Once we are well off into the forest we can come down and set up camp." Handing off the note, Lallek climbs up the nearest tree and waits for Jace to follow. It wasn't the ocean like back home, but there was a certain comfort in the lofty trees. This was a place that he could grow fond of. 2012-07-13 00:29:41 Lallek Aldren rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics" 7,2,1,1,2,4,10,1,5 (1 successes) From up in the tree, Lallek charts his path forward. If Jace chooses to follow him, he would be ready to go. Tree Treading: 2012-07-13 00:34:38 Lallek Aldren rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics" 10,8,2,2,6,7,1,2,5 (2 successes) Tree Treading Silently: 2012-07-13 00:29:59 Lallek Aldren rolled 7 dice to "Dex+Stealth" 10,7,5,4,5,10,8,9,3 (4 successes) The last athletics and stealth roll is just to make things move quicker if Jace takes to the trees. We can just move on ahead. Also just to clarify what Lallek is proposing. He wants to be closer to the lake than the wasteland or cornucopia so that's all this movement represents. Him trying to get deep into the forest.

Jace Colton[/u] This was much better. Shade and coolness and cover, and maybe they'd be able to find more berries and more mushrooms. Water would be easier to find, and maybe they'd even be able to hunt. He did still have that snare-wire. And then Lallek starts to climb, and he inwardly groans. Outwardly, he wrinkles his nose but nods at his partner's assessment. It'd be harder to be tracked if they took to the trees until they broke up their trail enough. At least this way, there'd be no one able to follow them. It was a smart move... ...But he sucked at climbing. Which meant he'd just have to get better. Necessity demanded it because looking at that blood on the ground? Necessity demanded it. 2012-07-13 03:21:13 Jace Colton rolled 4 dice to "Climbing" 2,9,5,7 (1 successes) Of course, he wasn't fast at it, but so long as he made sure he had steady footholds and handholds, he wouldn't fall. "Bear with me, Lallek. There aren't many trees where I'm from." He laughs it. Being in good spirits, regardless of how hurt he was, would be good for sponsors to see. 2012-07-13 03:28:05 Jace Colton rolled 4 dice to "Moving" 1,1,2,2 (0 successes) 2012-07-13 03:28:42 Jace Colton rolled 4 dice to "Moving" 3,8,6,5 (1 successes) 2012-07-13 03:29:27 Jace Colton rolled 4 dice to "Moving" 10,5,7,10,8,9 (4 successes)
At first, he's hardpressed. There's no keeping up with someone that athletic. Not right away, and he knows that just a little fear--a tiny bit of fear of heights--keeps him clinging to the tree-trunk. There was no room for fear in the Arena though, and after talking himself up he manages to get passed it and out onto a limb. The first attempt is fumbly and he fails, but the second is a little better and he makes it. And soon he manages to start keeping up. Gets the hang of things. At this rate, they'd be alright.

Sliding down out of the tree, Lallek's eyes dart around in search of any potential threats. There wouldn't be an ambush so long as he kept his wits about him. 2012-07-16 03:18:09 Lallek rolled 5 dice to "Perception" 9,8,7,8,3 (3 successes) We should find a good shelter, trap it and then begin hunting for supplies. The day was buring away and Lallek wasn't keen on wasting time. For now he would find shelter. A safe place to sleep was what they both needed, especially after last night. Jace's wounds needed rest to heal properly, but in these games that was unlikely. Still it never hurt to try. There was also an explanation owed to his partner, to them both. 2012-07-16 03:19:29 Lallek rolled 6 dice to "Wits+Survival" 10,5,1,2,9,2,4 (2 successes)

As the two move through the trees; they discover an odd thing. In the few hours since they had departed the Forrest; the ground beneath their feet had become well trampled with signs of others' passing. There were blood marks at the beginning of the Forrest. Further within reveals a muddy area with disturbed vegetation - and more blood. Two sets of foot prints go off in two different directions - one towards the Lake and one deeper into the western area of the Forrest. Clearly, you weren't the only ones searching here.
It would take you about an hour to find a decent place to work on a shelter. Traveling through the trees was slower progress; and so you were likely only a moderate walk to the edge of the Forrest. The Forrest here had a small valley; with slippery, moss covered rocks. The high edge of the valley was higher than the surrounding Forrest; offering a good vantage point. The vantage point had only three old growth trees spaced closely together, however. The rest were smaller saplings or bushes no taller than one's head. One could hide in that tree - cover and beware of seeing seen in the more open area.

"Hello, tributes," The voice of the announcer comes down from the heavens. "- we have an announcement to make. Some of you have dire needs for gear to aid your survival. The Feast will be occuring at the Cornucopia tomorrow afternoon. Others will find additional gear to help the odds be in your favor. May the odds be ever in your favor..."

The assessment of their situation wasn't one Lallek cared for. If they took the cover of the valley they were screwed because there was no way to see incoming danger. If they took the ridge for shelter, they couldn't hide from anyone, but had the small benefit of seeing who wanted to kill them. Both options seemed equally horrible. Of the two though, Lallek was inclined to hide rather than see all. In the event there were people scouting these woods and they tried to use the ridge as a vantage point they would be spotted.
Then came the ringing voices of the Capitol. The Feast...That is a blessing and a curse.
"I think we should camp low and hide as well as we can. With the Feast tomorrow I have a plan, though you won't like it. The Feast is meant to be a second bloodbath. As much as I like to imagine hiding for most of the Games then collecting bracelets from corpses that isn't going to happen. Tomorrow we should make for the Cornucopia once the Feast begins, target an individual or small group as they try to escape, and ambush them. It isn't pretty or kind, but if we make ourselves too boring the Gamemakers will make our lives lethally entertaining. There is also the matter of Pearl. We need to talk about her." Lallek pauses as he gives consideration to this. If he couldn't trust Jace he couldn't trust anyone. She has a very important role to play that I haven't been entirely honest about."

Lallek was right, and he knew it. That they'd need to make things entertaining, or things would get really hard really fast.
"I should also probably get looking for a medicinal plant or two. I need to not let this get infected."
As for the Feast, he could think of at least one thing that they needed. He'd gone through all the bandages in the medical kit trying to keep his wound clean and from festering.
He didn't want to lose his leg, if by some miracle that he managed to get home.
"What about Pearl? What's so important about her? Other than...she's from your district?" Just like Micha was from his.

The hard part. Honesty. Showing his compatriot his true motivations and intent in these games would change things, for better or worse, they would change.
"I took out enough tesserae to guarantee I would be in these games. It was an absolute certainty. Half of the supplies I was given went to Pearl and her sister Amy. The whole reason I put myself in this frell*** up place was for her. After the Reaping she became my sole objective in the Games. I swore I would keep her alive no matter what, but to do that no one could know. It would mean too much leverage on me. You are my friend, and I am committed to BOTH of you leaving here alive. She has to make it though. If she dies in here I sold my soul to the Capitol for nothing." The note is never ripped out. It just sets in the book.
Writing it breaks down some barriers though. Lallek begins to silently cry. All this deception just to confess to it in the arena. It made so much seem futile and made the hurt that much worse.

Jace Colton[/u]
He wouldn't ask why. It wasn't his place. Pearl was important to Lallek for whatever reason, and it wasn't his place to pry. It was rude, and as such Jace read the paper, and then looked up at his ally.
His friend.
There was only so much he could say aloud right now. 'Sold your soul to the Capitol' couldn't come out of his mouth. Not here. Not now.... ...Not when there were cameras.
"You got here the same way I did--except I didn't intend on...right." He had hoped he wouldn't get picked, but fifty-six extra chances in the tessarae were what had damned him to it. Jace was more than sure of that.
Someone might say he was stupid, or too giving, but he couldn't stand to watch his family starve, and he wouldn't want to know the kind of person who could., and his jaw clenched. These people were monsters, and maybe if he were braver he'd tell them such, but right now he had a goal, and he was going to see it through.
For better or for worse.
Lallek's silent tears don't fail to soften him though. Jace was many things, but he was a 'brother' to five people someplace far away, and he swallowed, putting a hand on Lallek's shoulder and squeezing it.
"Listen." It's soft, and he's conscious of the fact that they're likely being watched, but that wasn't what this was about. "You and me? We're good. You didn't tell me because you didn't know if you could trust me, right? Now you know.
"I ain't goin' nowhere. I also meant what I said earlier: I ain't goin' home without you. It's me and you, or it's nothin'. Got it?"
The cameras would eat this up, but that wasn't why he was doing it. "You're my brother here, and family is everything to me." And there was no place in Panem where family is more important than in District 9. "All or nothin', Lallek. We got us this far."
"Right?"

There is a hand on his shoulder and then soothing words. Jace was trying to comfort him, to reassure him. There was one thing he needed to feel comfort, one promise he needed to feel at peace in here.
"Will you make me a promise then, brother to brother? If I die in here, however that may be, do you promise to save her? Will you take her in my place if I can't bring her out of here with us?" It was unfair to ask. Impossible to ask, but this was all Lallek had. There was no one else in the Games that he could rely on. No one else to turn too or ally with that he could trust.
Jace or bust.
Lallek waits his tears not even dried, waiting for his ally's verdict. If Jace would promise him this, then Lallek could focus on the task at hand, survival.

Jace Colton[/u]
It was a big thing to promise.
"If you die here, I will stop at nothing. I promise." Even if it meant he'd die. He meant what he said: All or nothing. Him and Lallek, or nothing at all. If Lallek died? He'd do everything he had to do to make sure Pearl lived.
Even if that meant he had to die to pull it off.
"I swear. On Jan's life. I swear it." Because his own was already forfeit. It had been the moment that woman had called his name and the Peacekeepers had torn him from his twin brother's arms.
"I will stop at nothing. I swear it."

Jace Colton[/u] "I'm going to look for some medicine. And food. I need you to watch my back." And then they'd need to start hunting down those bracelets. They had some food, but they also needed to somehow survive. The bracelets would do them both no good if they died of starvation. "We've got this, Lallek. We can do this. Jace and Lallek move through the Forrest as Jace follows his instincts. He gathers a good handful of mushrooms and finds a small grove of fruit trees. He and Lallek each grab about six apples before picking the trees clean. On the next hill; Jace discovers a small honeybee hive. With some delicate maneuvering; the two would have some sweet desert.
After looking for food; Jace begins searching for what they need to survive. He finds some good, broad leaves to use as bandages and a vine that could be used to tie the leaves on. There is an aspirin tree for pain management - foul tasting; but a good thing to have the night before the Feast. He finds a line of beetles moving through the Forrest floor - these beetles with strong pincers that could be used to naturally seal cuts closed, if one could stomach pincers doing so.
Jace and Lallek hear a distant cannon sound. One has died the evening before the Feast.... The sky above opens with a image. There is to be a highlight reel for the tributes this year! Lallek and Jace can see the other tributes moving and interacting clearly in the sky. The camera centers on a hot, sandy wasteland. It closes in on an aerial view of a male and female tribute who are running. The camera zooms out to reveal a large dinosaur like lizard in pursuit of them; moving quite fast. It comes up behind Odin; swinging its large head in sideways to knock him off balance. Before he can react; it's head snakes in and makes a mean bite below his left knee. Odin bellows in pain as Sorrel heaves him to his feet. The two move slower now; heading up a dune towards people unseen for now. The camera focusses in on Thrall and Kale; good sized packs on thier shoulders.
Odin and Sorrel reach the crest of the dune; the dinosaur in hot pursuit. Thrall and Kale open fire with ranged attacks. Sorrel is attacked and nearly bitten; but Thrall encourages the hesitating Odin to pull her free. The two charge past Thrall and Kale; who convince the beast to go another route. The two district 11 tributes slow by a large, sparse tree. Sorrel helps Odin get his large form into it and follows after him; hoping for a brief resprite before resuming the painful walk. With the ordeals of the day, Sorrel drifts off to sleep.
Sorrel has a terrible sight when she opens her eyes. Odin lays sprawled in the tree, his bloated face staring sightlessly. His leg smells horrendous and she quickly realizes that the bite must have been infected. Odin's death had taken merely an hour, she supposed. She hopes he realized that he was with a friend at the end. After a few moments of panic, she hears a sound. Shuffling through the sand... Using the tree to her advantage, she sees another dinosaur - like creature approaching. Sorrel removes Odin's pack and weapon; hurriedly descending the tree. She takes off at a run as the creature notices the tree...
The camera centers in the Frozen Wasteland, on a well camoflagued hidden shelter made with a tarp and sleeping bag. How had Rachel gotten a sleeping bag since you had last seen her? The girl moves out of her shelter; leveling her binoculars at Tank and Klo. With a frown; she moves away from the two; heading into the woods. The girl moves slowly and with great purpose, snaking through the woods nearly silently. She comes across a makeshift camp - a tent, a blanket, the makings of a fire...
Rachel leaps into action, grabbing the blanket from the tent. She helps herself to half of the wood laid out for the fire; hurriedly packing all in her pack. The brunnette turns to leave when a tackle takes her legs out from under her. Its a two person alliance, she realizes as she scrabbles backwards. The black haired girl is wild and fierce; fighting Rachel with dirty moves such as pulling her hair and clawing at her eyes. The male is scrappy, coming in at Rachel from the side.
The girl manages to scrabble away on her hands and knees, breaking into a run. She hurriedly passes a white bird coming towards the sound of a fight. The bird streaks towards the compound and Rachel hears screams. Rachel smiles as she limps with her newfound gear back to the Frozen Tundra. She surveys Tank and Klo again before settling into her shelter, gingerly tying her leg with a scrap of blanket.
The camera centers on a pair in the forrest. One is roasting a bird over an open fire; the other is roughly washing a nasty cut on his forearm. You see that this is the alliance that Rachel had fled from. The pair hear a crashing noise and look up; sword and bow at the ready. Sorrel comes into sight and freezes at the sight of them. The male is already on his feet towards her; sword in hand. Sorrel back peddles; but it looks like a bad situation.
"I can help with that!" She announces desparately, indicating the wound on the black haired girl. "Wait," The girl announces, standing with some difficulty. "- you better not be lying." "No, I can. You have to be careful out here. My district mate just died from a cut like that..."
The girl made a motion and the boy roughly seized Sorrel by the arm; frogwalking her over to his partner. Sorrel settles in next to the girl; examining the cut.
"Boil the water." She announces, taking the skin that the girl was using. "And get me a clean cloth. Do you have a needle? A first aid kit?"
These two were better equipped than she and Odin had been; and she quickly sanitizes and stitches the wound shut. The girl seems pleased; jerking her head at the male and making some inarticulate grunt. The male rewards Sorrel with a personal size loaf of bread; which she tears in half and consumes one half immediately.
"We could use you for the feast." The girl decides. "We're going to be bashing some people up. You stick with us through the feast; we'll watch you through that night. "
"And I'll be healing you up; keeping you from getting sick and picked off like a wounded animal." Sorrel reminds them. "I get to pick through the gear you take."
The two consider for a moment; nodding with a "Deal."

Lallek hugs Jace warmly before they depart. It was a bit uncharacteristic but he owed that much. After collecting the apples, Lallek leaves Jace to his search and branches out on his own. Sure his partner was weak, but they had needs and they both needed to be working if they hoped to survive the night. Taking off, he begins a search for poisonous plants to harvest. A natural toxin to add to his knives would be a perfect way to weaken an opponent before an evening attack and Lallek does his best to find poisons that would aid in that. Following his excursion for poisons he returns to the area of their base camp. There wasn't enough time to trap as extensively as by the Lake but he could continue his work tomorrow. For now, Lallek makes a few pitfalls around the camp and prepares for Jace's return. The night would show the deaths, and if the highlight reel was any indicator, tomorrow would be messy. Knowing who was gone would be a rather large boon. 2012-07-19 17:05:44 Lallek rolled 4 dice to "Int+Craft" 1,9,5,1 (1 successes) 2012-07-19 17:04:40 Lallek rolled 4 dice to "Int+Craft" 2,9,3,3 (1 successes)

Jace Colton[/u] The hug was a shock, but all at once it made him feel human again. For a moment, he was just someone's brother, and there weren't monstrous people watching and waiting to see when he died and how brutally it would happen. But then it's time to go. Time to gather food and medicine. To find some of the things they needed, and trust Lallek to do the same on his end. It was a wonder his family was starving back home, the way Jace could find food. Then again, two mouths to feed was a lot easier than eight, and his brothers and sisters had never been the best at scavenging. Sewing and cleaning and Jan could charm like there was no tomorrow, but Jace was the one gifted at surviving, and patient enough to watch their father and learn. He was going to be sick of mushrooms, when this was over. Probably wouldn't be able to stomach them ever again assuming they made it home. Apples--twelve in all--and even some honey? Honey, his mother had told him, was the only food in the world that never spoiled. Which made it incredibly valuable. Assuming of course, they didn't happily eat it with the apples. Then it was time to find medicine. The medicinal leaves were a godsend, and the vines would work great. It meant he could change his bandages tonight. It also meant that maybe the both of the would be able to get a bit of sleep without dealing with a whole lot of pain-induced discomfort. And the pincers? That meant he'd be able to maybe seal a few of the nastier cuts he had. He goes back slowly, knowing that Lallek had been rigging their little campsite, though halfway there he jumped at the cannon, looking up at the sky instinctively and thanking God that he wasn't suddenly alone. The highlight reel made him slightly nauseous, but at least he knew that they weren't alone in the forest. Which meant he knew they couldn't be building big huge smoky fires. "Can you think of anything we absolutely need to survive from the Feast that we haven't managed to snag from the forest?" He didn't want to tempt fate. It felt wrong, even as he changed his bandages to the leaves. Used the pincers to seal a wound or two. "I don't want to necessarily get drawn into another blood-bath. We could use the opportunity to go lookin' for bracelets. Let them all kill each other, and get a head start." 2012-07-21 03:48:29 Jace Colton rolled 6 dice to "Intelligence + Medicine + First Aid Specialty" 1,6,7,6,2,10,1 (1 successes) 2012-07-21 03:49:08 Jace Colton rolled 6 dice to "Intelligence + Medicine + First Aid Specialty" 4,6,2,7,2,1 (0 successes) 2012-07-21 03:49:52 Jace Colton rolled 6 dice to "Intelligence + Medicine + First Aid Specialty" 6,2,9,8,2,4 (2 successes)

Lallek managed to find a plant that secreted a odd, noxious sap. He decided that it was good for coating knives- as long as he didn't touch it. Lallek will need to be careful not to touch the poison with his bare hands/ skin. If he does; he will sicken. I will ask him to make a roll when he does handle his knives. It takes Lallek two hours to create two pit falls. Please describe the pit falls with more than a sentence, please.

"Snare wire for traps and hunting. Maybe arrows for the bows. Water purification." They weren't vitals but right now they lacked for nothing truly. "If we want to win, we need to be smart not rash. A way to weaken people before we fight them for instance." Lallek points at the small noxious plants that he collected during the day. Then the talk of bracelets. They needed them to win, but searching held little appeal. "The bracelets will be trapped. I'd much rather face people than the machines of the Capitol. Lets skirt the Feast, wait for a small group of one or two to split away and then go for them. We can avoid the big fighting as much as possible."The pitfalls are small holes in the earth about knee deep. In the bottom small sharpened stakes have been placed to ensure that the pitfalls pack more bite. Twigs and leaves were placed over the top.

Lallek feels that his pitfalls will do an adequate job of protecting base camp. Does the pair want to hide some resources here; or will they continue to pack everything on their backs? They do realize that these packs may be a little heavy for any foot races to come. They also remember that there were some water resources in the Forrest that could be gathered; although purification would need to be gained from the Feast... or perhaps wait for sponsors to deliver in the evening; about six hours from now.

"They decided to be idealistic. We decided to be pragmatic. It kind of clashed." Badly. But he couldn't make himself sorry for it. The whole thing had been a mess. He'd been in it to survive, and they'd been in it for rebellion, and it just would have ended badly regardless.
"We'll let everyone else do the work of 'finding' the things. They can't go home until they get rid of us, right? We'll use the time to take out stragglers, and when the more capable show up to take us out? We take them out, and take the bracelets."
At least, that was the plan as he understood it from Lallek's end.
"That about right, bro?"

"Can't go home until something gets rid of us." Rachel agrees to a point. "Do you remember how many tributes are left, now? Big alliance has Micha, Pearl, Rory, Tank, Jasmine and Rowan, right? Those three boys went after them and then I heard a cannon. So one thorn from our side is already plucked for us essentially just staying alive."
Rachel took a long drink from her skin. She glanced between Lallek and Jace.
"So, stragglers. I've passed a few people in pairs or by themselves over the last few days. Want to look one up?"

"We'll be able to count it down tonight during the Anthem. Figure out who's left and what we need to do to win." Jan was smarter than he was. He'd find who needed to be found, and charm them into going after the others.
Then his own alliance would take out the injured and maimed leftovers, and take the bracelets off the corpses.
Jan was the charmer. Ruthless. Jace couldn't keep up with that. If it were both of them in the same Games, he wasn't sure who would win. He wasn't sure he wouldn't let Jan kill him. He probably would. Or they'd die together.
Funny where his thoughts went sometimes when he was just...wondering.
"We need to get cleaned up and back to base-camp, and then we need to decide on a real plan. Survival is good--I"m better than most at it--but we need a plan other than that. They're collecting bracelets and we've wasted a day, so we either need to start killing people," Not something he wanted to think about. "Or we need to start doing the same.

"You have a base - camp? Excellent. Did you guys get hurt?" She eyes Jace and Lallek critically. "I say we get moving in the direction that the bracelet was broadcast-ed. The Lake or the Wasteland. We find a bracelet or we destroy whoever we encounter."
A grey cloud cover rolled over the Forrest, bringing with it the clap of thunder. Rainfall soon pounded the lush green landscape. The Forrest came alive with the sound of water running off of branches, dripping through leaves and reflecting off of rocks. The amount of moving water suggested that this would be a heavy down pour. The temperature dipped ten degrees, lending goosebumps to exposed flesh. Without cover, this was going to be miserable. One couldn't help but wonder about getting sick, as well.
Rachel donned her coat, pulling her hood over her head. It was warm for the Forrest, but it would keep the rain off of her. Hopefully sweating from the warmth wouldn't make her overheat or get sick. "Do you guys have a tarp?" She asked. "We need to make a rain cover at your camp."

As the group converses, a new occurrence happens.
Boom![/size][/b]
The cannon sound was a bit far away - on the Grey mountains somewhere.

Jace jumped, swallowing as he looked between Lallek and Rachel.
Jesus... "Right. We need to get shelter." His bag is looked down at for the first time, and he looked down into it... ..That was better than the one he had now. Either of them. "There's nothing in my bag for shelter, so unless Lallek has something..."
He knew he didn't.
"Come on. Let's get moving to camp."
