The only RPs I've every been in have been third-person either present or past tense. So for me, first person is hard to follow because it is something I am not familiar with.
I use the first person narrative when I write short stories, but as I've said never seen it in a rpg.

Personally I would use the first person in certain one on one Roleplays where the focus is primarily on two characters and thus less 'Narrator whiplash' in how the story reads. I would also use it when talking about a TT character far more than online. I find that in any bulletin board, email or chat third person is the default though it does tend to vary between present and past tense. I post in first-person because: 1 That's what I'm most comfortable with 2 It really helps me connect with the character, situation, and story in general first one I have no problem with, second one seems that if I were being uncharitable I could take offence at that. However I'll just say that surely if one is inside the character's headspace how that information is put down on 'paper' is unimportant. This is not true, I have searched both the original sign up and the new sign up and Neither includes any mention of tense/person usage either first or third person. As always with such things, the statement is that if its not there feel free to start it yourself. As I say this is a personal thing if others do have problems then thats not my issue.

Fu, I never said you couldn't post in a first person in the sign up, but I don't think that I said it was encouraged. I'd rather every one be happy and engaged in the RP than someone having difficulty in reading your posts. Would you mind trying out a third person post pattern this week?
I would really appreciate if every one took a moment to read the person's post before their own and try to react to something that they have said - or some action that they have taken. I would appreciate some emphasis given to your character(s) expression(s) and if the writers around that character respond in kind. I want this to be a more interactive RP where the characters converse with one another in a relevant, quick fashion. I'd prefer a shorter post more often than a longer post less often because it keeps your character more 'present' in the RP. This means your character says or does something and the others on the scene can immediately reply, making it more interactive.
I also wanted to clarify something that some people have asked me. When I run more than one NPC in a scene - for example, Beast, Pyro, Cyclops, Priya, Jimmy, Sophia, Chelsea and Ryan (all who are present in the new rpg thread) - I tend to write for 3 characters at a time. I will respond to questions asked to all and post reactions for all, but likely in alternating GM posts. Feel free to ask for a response from a specific NPC here.

Now on a happy note, XP is being assigned!
Tesla needs to post into the new thread before he can collect his XP. Storm, Devon, Shade, Nightcrawler, Havoc, Magneto and the NPCs can collect 10 XP to be spent on whatever they wish. Post your buys here and wait for me to approve them. Some buys may need additional training.

Jad I don't mean to be a stickler. But I have to ask: when did the Professor tell Wolverine that Beast and Mystique were former students of his? And if Wolverine knows that, then he knows that Alex Summers was also one of the first classers, too, correct? However it still doesn't make any sense why or how Wolverine knows this. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just curious where in the movies you're pulling this information from.

Charles and Logan had long conversations over the years about Wolverines missing memories. Charles could have used his ability to restore Logan's memories but chose to talk to him confidentially instead.
The question has never been posed as to why Charles Xaxier took Wolverine in so quickly with any vetting. It just seemed to me that Charles knew something of Wolverine before they actually met. That is why Charles trusted Logan from the get go, or that is the inference I draw from the story. The story is taking place well over 15 years after Logan lost his memoires, and he's been with the X-Men at least 15 years.
In 15 years, Logan would have pestered Charles enough about fixing his memory that sooner or later Charles would have had to explain why he wouldn't. The only other person who Charles would have let in is Jean Grey. It's not like Charles shared his life story Wolverine, but dropped enough tidbits in their conversations for Logan to put some of it together.

I haven't re-watched X-Men 3 yet, but saw X1&2 and First Class recently. Wolverine appears in First Class, but merely tells Xavier and Eric to "Piss off" and they leave him alone.
I'm not sure how many years are between First Class and X1, but we can assume no contact during that period. I'm also not sure how much time passes between X2 and X3, but I'm pretty sure it is far less than 15 years. I won't know for sure 'til I re-watch X3, of course. This RP is set 1 week after the events of X3, as I recall, so I'm not sure how much Logan would know.

Hey Fu, in X-Men2, Stryker says that he had not seen Wolverine in 15 years. It was Stryker who did the memory lose and metal skeleton to Wolverine, so there is 15 years between Wolverine losing his memory and X2. When X1 happened is up for conjecture, but it happened between the memory lose and X2. First class happens in the early '60s.
There are two major storylines that come together in X1, one is the Sabertooth, Wolverine story and the other is the Professor, Magneto storyline.
In first class, Charles learns of Wolverine because he is using the machine(can't remeber off hand what its called) to track down mutants. In his tracking he did learn something of the mutants like what their power was, Charles would remember the meeting in First Class with Logan although Logan would not remember it.
If questioned in character as to his source, Logan would try to explain. I haven't watched X1 in a long time. I'll need to watch it again to see how Logan and Charles get along. What I remember is that Charles made Logan an Xmen over the complaints of Cyclops, Storm and even Jean Grey. There was an alsmost immediate trust of Logan by Charles in X1 that was never explained. I'm using some artistic license to put flesh on the part of the storyline that is rather sparce. What I'm trying to say is that there is more to Logan's and the Profeesor's relationship than is reported in the movies.

I'm pretty sure there is not a 15yr gap between X1 & X2. 15 years is purely the amount of how far back Wolverine's memories go. This is mentioned by Xavier (or maybe someone else, but probably him) in X1, and by Stryker in X2, leading me to believe there is less than 1yr between X1 & X2 cannon.
Near the end of X1, Charles gives Logan the Alkali Lake lead and Logan steals Cyclops' bike to go investigate, leaving his tags behind with Rogue. When we encounter him in X2 and a base is mentioned at Alkali Lake, he says he's searched all over that area and assures them there is no base there, to which the reply is "not on the surface, it's underground" (I'm paraphrasing).
You are right that there is 15yrs between him losing his memory and X2, but not in the placement of X1 on that timeline.
As I previously stated regarding him teaching Pyro: He only spent 48hrs in the mansion in X1, and didn't become a professor until after Pyro deserts the X-Men in X2. He leaves for Alkali Lake at the end of X1 and doesn't return until partway through X2, so regardless how much cannon time elapses between these 2 films, he is not present as an X-Man in the interim.
I still haven't re-watched X3 yet, might do today. I still thoroughly doubt anywhere near 15yrs passes between X2 and X3 cannon - I will look for clues when I watch it for a better timeline.
The reason Charles trusted Logan is obvious, actually: Through his mutation, he knew Logan's mind. If you wish to use some artistic license over the amount of interaction between Charles and Logan, perhaps they had phone conversations while he explored Alkali lake, and obviously there was interaction throughout the interceding time between X2 and X3. I hope to narrow down a benchmark of what cannon time passed between the films when I watch X3 again.
Hope this helps.

There is no 15 year time span between the movies. Rogue is about 15-17 at the start of X1. If Wolverine was there for fifteen years Rogue would have been about 30 toward the end. Which is not the case.
Jad, if you're saying that their relationship (between him and the Professor) goes deeper than is shown in the movies, okay, but the movies is where we are pulling this information from. And it just doesn't make sense why the Professor would confide in Wolverine before Scott or Ororo or Hank. Regardless of him knowing his mind and meeting him before now, Wolverine was still not an official X-Men until the near the middle of the second one. During the start of X3 Wolverine is actually being compassionate in regards to Scott's loss. By the end he and Storm have a good relationship and he's willing to be a team player.
According to the wiki
"In an attempt to help him learn more about his past, Xavier sends Wolverine to a military base near Alkali Lake." - X1
"The next scene returns to the school, with Professor Xavier, Cyclops, and Wolverine talking about Jean's past. They are then interrupted by Colossus and a large number of the students who are supposed to be in their next class. While they leave, Wolverine tells Cyclops that Jean made a choice and that it was him, which relieves Cyclops a good deal." - X2
"...opens with the X-Men in battle against a giant robot. Kitty Pryde and Colossus have joined the team, although Cyclops is absent. Storm insistes on working as a team, but Wolverine has Colossus throw him as he cuts the giant robot's head off. Storm is upset with Logan for not working as a team." - X3
"Wolverine is disgusted to learn that Xavier has kept Jean in check telepathically, but when Jean awakens, he realizes she is not the Jean Grey he knew. Jean pleads with Wolverine to kill her, but when he refuses, the Phoenix surfaces and knocks out Wolverine, before escaping to her childhood home." - X3
"Magneto and his allies are already at Jean's childhood home when Xavier and his X-Men arrive. The two men vie for Jean's loyalty until the Phoenix resurfaces. She destroys her family's house, disintegrates Xavier, and leaves with Magneto." - X3
Now the wiki leaves out Wolverine and Beast's clever plan to cure Magneto. Wolverine says something about working as a team. And they succeed in curing Magneto. After that, Wolverine tells Storm to take the others and go. And then he "saves" Jean by killing her. Then he sobs while holding her dead body.
"The school continues without Xavier, with Storm now as headmistress and Logan as a teacher. The US president appoints Beast as ambassador to the United Nations, Rogue returns, telling Iceman she has taken the cure and the two hold hands skin-to-skin for the first time. The depowered Magneto sits at a chessboard in a park and reaches toward a metal chess piece that moves slightly. In a post-credits scene, Dr. Moira MacTaggert checks on a comatose patient who greets her with Xavier's voice. Startled, she replies, "Charles?"" - X3

I am following the discussion closely. I do have to agree that Wolverine has a time gap in memory and it makes sense for him to want to fill it. However, this gap is not in the movies - as its been mentioned, our teenagers do not age into adults. Jad, I'd be willing to work this in as a sub plot for Wolverine.
OK, we are closing the main debrief as not much is being accomplished. For those in limbo - Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto - please post in here with what your character is doing and WHERE they are doing it, and threads will arise. If your character needs a thread with someone, post the request here (such as Magneto and Devon).
Do remember that Shade's writer is on vacation and I'm writing him as recovering offscreen. Don't be offended at no tags from Shade. This week is a good week to work on in character interaction in private, smaller threads between two or three characters. Jad, perhaps Wolverine could talk to Storm. There was a lot of mis -communication ic.

The movies as canon leave a lot to be desired. The love triangle was rushed in the movies. In X1 we see the beginning of it, but in X2 it is fully developed as if something more happened behind the scenes, but Logan was gone the whole time between the movies, X1 and X2.
If all we have is of the triangle is what is on scene, then there really wasn't much of a triangle.
The other problem with timeline is in X1 that they find Wolverine living in the back woods of Canada like a crazy man who just lost his memories, then in X2, it's stated by Stryker that it happened 15 years ago. The other conclusion you can draw is that he ran around the backwoods of Canada for 15 years and no one ever noticed. Neither Stryker nor Sabertooth ever tried to find him.
Are we using firstclass as part of the canon and how about Wolverine: Origins? If Origins is in, does Logan remember Gambit? Gambit was the first mutant that Logan met after the lose of his memory. I could see Logan lying low in Canada. I can believe that Gambit told Logan to go to ground after the battle at Three Mile Island. That's what Gambit would have done.

He wasn't really a 'crazy man' at the start of X1, I thought he was a trucker? and seemed pretty settled in his loner nomadic lifestyle, until rogue...

My last question is: what happened to the boy that the cure was made from?
In character, Logan would like to interact with Mysyique and the Furball.
Out of character, I don't Storm's disrepecting Logan. His regen was stronger than Jean Grey's attack. Even Magneto could only hold him off and not tare him apart.
By the movie, the cure thatBeast was working on and the one in the third movie were different, but Hank was part of the oversight of the child's cure, so he'd know something about it also.

The boy was rescued by the XMen and allowed to go home, I assume. Also I'm reading the thread as Logan disrespecting Storm at an alarming rate, to continue to argue with her in front of her subordinates and students.
Every one make certain to get your character into a personal thread. Post what thread they are in here, I'll make a master list.
Also CLM, the level 5 powers will need a week of IC training before you can record it on the sheet. You and I can write together to form the breakthrough. Quinn, the skill buys are allowed and approved.

Thanks Anne, I rewatch X3 yesterday. In X1, the had Sabertooth save Wolverine's dog tags and yet never explaing why. Having been a fan of the comics so many years ago, I was expecting more of that relationship to be shown in X1. I'm glad the yellow spandex got lost though.
Logan got a lot of answers in X2, but they came from Stryker, and they were skewed. I'm playing it that Logan has had memory flashes of both Stryker and Sabertooth and his ordeal. Although after X2 the ordeal played less and less. His run in with Beast in X3 needs a little treatment as I don't believe that some one didn't explain to Hank Logan's situation after Hank called him a boy.
I can see how Hank and Eric and Raven would have a hard time treating Logan as a peer. They really haven't known him that long, and he looks only 30 maybe 35.
I could also see Logan haunted by the vision of a dead woman on Three Mile Island and feeling some how responsible for it. The connection between that and Jean's death might stir up old lost memories of love lost from his past.

You know Jad, its a little rude to just jump into a relatively, and clearly titled as such, private-ish thread without even a slight 'is this okay?' now since they are simply within the mansion its not really a problem, but a little bit of manners would not have gone amiss ooc.

Yes, lets please remember this week is for private character meetings and character growth, and bonds between characters. If you want to meet with someone ,request it here and make a thread. Do request if you may join a private thread ( a thread with specific names in them) in this OOC before jumping in. There will be multiple threads and you can only be in one at a time.

Sorry about that, didn't follow protcol cause I wasn't aware of it. That's no excuse, but I did Logan a quick out of that thread.
If Devon and Magneto continue their conversation like he's not there, Logan will wander off.
The only person that Logan might talk to is Raven. Her toe's are the only ones he hasn't stepped on so far. So, I request a thread with Mystique when she is free.

Mystique would more than welcome such a visitor to her holding-cell, particularly if he lets himself inside it rather than talking from beyond the barrier (door/forcefield/whichever it is in this cannon). He'd probably get in trouble if anyone saw him do that, of course, but if no-one else is around to see, who would know? Got a bit more interaction to go with Storm and Beast first though, sorry to leave you hanging Jad. Perhaps Logan might visit Jean's grave or something in the interim... Seems like something cannon he might do at this point, but entirely up to you of course.

Jad, I've still got Alex Summers without a thread. If you want, Alex can bother Wolverine. They don't know each other. But Alex was one of the first X-Men.

|
|
Post by Jad on Aug 21, 2012 16:08:51 GMT -5
Alex Summers is Havoc if memory serves me well, is he related to Scott Summers, Cyclops?
Sure, Alex can intercept Logan while he is walking the grounds. The gravestones of Charles and Jean seem a logical place.
Rico, Logan's comment about odds and evens stems from the three movies. In the first and third movie, Magneto and Wolverine were at odds. In the second movie, they were fighting a common enemy, Stryker, so this is the fourth scenario in which both Logan and Eric are involved. It's even so this one they're on the same side, ok, not the same side exactly, but they share a common enemy. I was just making a joke out of it in passing.
This is a little known fact; social security numbers are used as your military ID number. So, Wolverine's dog tags have his military ID number and if you look closely at them they are a SS number, I remeber the first 3 digits as 528 or 530 then a dash then two numbers then another dash and then four numbers. The first three numbers will give you an approximate time and place the number was issued. Now, I know that this number was made up and given to Logan by Stryker, but the first three numbers place Logan in the Western half of the country between the '60s. The first three nubers place time and place the number was issued, not date of birth. Thisis one of those little details that the movies got right. My point is that what Logan learned from Stryker and the dog tags put together, Logan was in the US military some time after the mid '60s. Just another peice of Logan's puzzled history.
