Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn "He agreed. Even if he didn't say it, he agreed by being here. By adhering to the Day of Rest and then the Final Battle, and the little coward ran when things weren't going his way.
"He was the one who broke the agreement. We hunt him down."Jan put everything he was into that statement, and it helped that on some level he believed it. Cotton made a promise, and he broke it. There would be no quarter given. "Let's get moving."2013-03-12 20:51:09 Jan Colton rolled 12 dice to "Persuasion + Manipulation + Specialty + Striking Looks + Willpower" 10,5,10,2,9,2,7,5,6,3,9,9,4,3 (5 successes) [I'm thinking that it might be better for Ember to take point, if only because she's the best tracker.]

No one argued with Jan. As the tributes began to follow Ember into the Jungle; one had to wonder if this was just a temporary delay. Once Boomer was deceased, the terrible fight would commence... wouldn't it? Ember led the group to where she had found the arrow and the Celox packet. As every one processed that Cotton was healing, the group began to walk further into the jungle. The group followed the turn of the river and Felix recalled how close the Watchtower was to the river. "The cameras," Sassinak remembered, glancing towards Felix. "- the Watchtower had cameras. The cameras showed areas that are on fire now; but it showed the river. " She looked over towards the river on the left. "If Cotton's in there, he knows that we're coming.""Cotton was going to get cut down like a festival tree in the Capitol." Isolde pointed out. "Lacey died in two minutes. Cotton wouldn't have lasted as long as she did. Maybe he turned coward. Maybe he'd rather be eaten than cut down like that." She looked upwards, scanning the tree. "If he's desperate, he'd be moving fast. We should be able to pick up his trail faster." "Unless he's in the watch tower with the cameras." Sassinak argued. Ember led the group past where Felix and Sassinak knew the Watchtower to be. The trail wound towards the career camp where some of the group had been snared in the careers' traps. Ember and the group moved for about five minutes when Ember realized that the trail went cold. No Cotton. No sign of where he went. Looking back down at the tracks, she recognized that the foot prints were smudged. Cotton must have walked backwards a ways after laying this false trail. Cotton rolled 10 dice to " crafting false trail" 2,1,8,4,1,4,3,8,6,1 (2 successes) Every one roll perception, please. If you are rolling stealth, you are moving at half speed. Felix gets a -1 to stealth for the crutches.

As the line moved off into the jungle tracking Cotton, Lily was now in front of Jan and behind Ember, Sassinak was fourth, Felix was fifth and Isolde took up the rear of their hunting party. Every little noise had Lily looking in that direction, trying to keep her eyes peeled for any signs of the cowardly tribute. Lily regretted leaving her intelligence files behind, trying to recall the information on the plants as she kept moving. Lily Zelle rolled 5 dice to "Perception" 4,6,4,6,8 (1 success) Lily Zelle rolled 4 dice to "Stealth" 10,8,9,8,8 (5 successes)

Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World BurnIsolde had a point, though who hadn't gone into that fight expecting to die? Jan certainly had. He had the feeling that Lacey was gunning for him. Maybe Cotton too. The only shocker had been Felix... ...Who apparently... He was still trying to process it. Would he be able to do it? Would he be able to kill a boy who reminded him so much of Jace that it was almost painful to look at him? Could he do it...? Jan was just a tiny bit depressed to realize that the answer was most definitely 'yes'. He'd been prepared for it when he knew Brass had been gunning to kill the boy, just to keep the Career from District 2 from adding Felix's head to his belt. If Felix asked him to do it after being blinded and lamed? Jan wouldn't have hesitated.... The only reason now would be because Felix was just...better than he was. Jan would never...He wanted to live. He'd come to the Arena to die, and after meeting Ember and Lily and all these people, he wanted to live. Because he knew he could make a difference. He knew that one day, he'd be able to say that he swayed the hearts and minds of Panem. It would take someone ruthless to do the things that needed done... Felix was many things, but ruthless wasn't one of them. The Rebellion had it's Pure figurehead. The Rebellion needed someone who didn't mind getting his hands filthy. He followed Ember's lead. Quiet. Careful. Spending way too much effort on being quiet, and really not enough on his immediate surroundings.... He trusted Ember with that. He trusted himself to not die in a frankly stupid way. 2013-03-12 21:13:20 Jan Colton rolled 4 dice to "Stealth" 4,5,10,3,6 (1 successes) 2013-03-12 21:14:33 Jan Colton rolled 5 dice to "Perception" 6,5,4,5,3 (0 successes)

Felix Grayling“I agree with Jan; Cotton’s actions were cowardly.” Felix said as they headed off, “Lacey was the honourable one of the two, Cotton...” Felix stopped short. Regardless of Cotton’s cowardice, the boy had still given them a safe haven, given them food from his and Lacey’s stash... And it was only just sinking in that Lacey was gone. Felix felt a single tear roll down his cheek, and that was all he would allow himself. Lacey had been a strong girl, and even though their alliance had always been rocky, especially when Coral proved just how loyal she really was, he had trusted and respected her. Ember had given her an honourable send off, and Felix was thankful for that. He also envied Lacey; she had gotten out of this mess. And that was that. With a blink of his eyes, Felix regained composure. The time for mourning had long since passed, and now it was time to stay focused on Cotton. “If he is watching us, or at least has been... He has the upper hand.” Felix said quietly, “But we have strength in numbers. So long as we stay together, he won’t be able to drop us like flies.” Felix tried to stay on the alert. Felix Grayling rolled 6 dice to "perception" 3,8,6,4,3,4 (1 successes) Felix Grayling rolled 3 dice to "stealth [-1 crutches]" 10,3,7,10,4 (2 successes)

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember was the tracker. She went in front, feeling fine with taking point on this. She was the hunter. The tracker. That's why the Careers wanted her. She could do something they couldn't. And look how far it had gotten her. But then there was Cotton. He apparently could do something none of them could do. As Felix whispered Ember fought to roll her eyes. Did they not hunt in District Seven or what? It seemed that the tributes from District Seven shied away from the silence. It unnerved them. It never bothered Ember. She liked the quiet. “Shh...” she said in a voice that could be scarsely called a whisper. “Something's not right about any of this...”Ember Clay rolled 9 dice to "tracking" 4,1,1,7,10,2,7,1,8,4 (2 successes) Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Perception" 7,4,6,3,1,6,3,8 (1 successes) Ember Clay rolled 7 dice to "stealth" 5,3,4,8,4,8,1 (2 successes)

The group paused behind Ember as she cautioned silence. There was a long silence as the group looked about and were unsure where Cotton was. Sassinak glanced towards Ember and then turned, examining the path behind them. The girl from seven shrugged, indicating that she was unsure if Cotton was about. What would the group do? Looking around was providing zero results. Cotton might have been lacking in fighting skills, but he was making up for it by being a stealthy little so-and-so. Not dropping her guard, Lily tried reasoning with the elusive tribute. "How long do you think you can run before Panem gets sick of watching it? Everywhere else is on fire, you just united every remaining tribute against you by fleeing from the agreed plan that got us a day of peace in the first place and at least our way you had as much of a fighting chance as everyone else." Lily Zelle rolled 9 dice to "Fast-Talking" 10,10,7,5,10,1,1,9,4,10,10,10,6,7,8 (8 successes)
Lily Zelle rolled 6 dice to "Perception" 1,8,5,6,8,8 (3 successes) Lily Zelle rolled 5 dice to "Stealth" 10,4,3,10,2,4,6 (2 successes) Lily will be using Dodge once again for a Defense of 8.

Lily stands there fairly confident that she has stated an excellent case. Some around her feel that Cotton would be an idiot not to emerge and throw himself at their mercy. Lily's reasoning was so air tight. Yet the jungle remains quiet. Elusive. Dark. Overhead, thunder rumbles. There are no green forks of lighting. The Game Makers seem to be giving the tributes a little nudge.
Someone else seems to be giving a little nudge to Lily's shoulder as well. Maybe a 'atta girl'. Yet as the nudge began to wrap around her neck, she turned to see who the wise guy was. She came face to face with no one. Those around Lily notice a green vine curling around Lily's shoulder.

Felix GraylingFelix bit his lip when Ember told him to be quiet. He wasn’t good at thinking things through, apparently. When Lily spoke, he felt immensely proud of the young girl; apparently she knew how to manipulate people. And when Cotton didn’t emerge, Felix kept himself from sighing. He turned to Lily, about to say well done for trying, when his seeing-eye helmet told him about a vine snaking around her neck. Felix pulled his axe from his pack and, quickly as he could, made an attempt to keep the vine from killing his friend. Felix Grayling rolled 9 dice to "chop vine" 1,6,1,6,9,1,2,4,5(1 successes)

Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn Jan was behind Lily, but as the vine snaked down he'd been looking in another direction and attempting to remain quiet. Her speech though, made him grin. Made him wonder if that was his influence, or if she'd been hiding that little talent until just now. She was really good at that. Really good. "Well said, Lil..." He whispered, though he cut himself off when he saw the vine about to eat his 'little sister' and Felix's attempt to chop through it His knife would do no good against that thing--so said the farm-boy in him--, and drew the Silvered Machete from the Cornucopia and came down in one stroke. Hopefully, it would be enough. 2013-03-13 02:24:57 Jan Colton rolled 5 dice to "Perception" 5,4,5,3,10,5 (1 successes) 2013-03-13 02:30:21 Jan Colton rolled 10 dice to "Silvered Machete Yo" 1,1,9,6,4,10,4,10,9,10,5,4,2 (5 successes)

As Felix tries to cut the vine off of Lily, his axe nicks a few membranes off of the vine. The green flesh of the vine knits itself together in front of your eyes. Within seconds, only a very thin line remains of Felix's attack. Jan's silvered machete slices through the vine like a warm knife through butter. The cut vine thrashes violently like a snake, catching Lily across the check. Lily is knocked to the jungle floor, her throat slightly sore for the experience.

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember's heart dropped. Lily couldn't die like this. Not like this. She had made it so far. And... Jan's attack saved her little sister, and Ember could breathe again, rushing to Lily's side. “Shallow breaths, Lil' Bit. Shallow breaths” she said stroking Lily's back. “The Gamemakers are growing impatient.”Ember is at full dodge

The tributes discover that the vine seems to have conscious thought. The vine retreats upwards, escaping Jan's machete. The tributes have a moment to glance around before the vine descends behind Felix. It loops around his wrist, attempting to wrestle his weapon from him. The grip feels like a cold snake, but the grip is quite strong. The vine pulls against Felix, attempting to pull him off of his feet. Not fifteen feet from the group, a green vine loops around Cotton's neck. The boy makes a gargled cry. The noise is alarming to all who hear it - a desperate, cut off cry that signals danger. Cotton is slowly wrapped in a vise like grip, the vine strangling Cotton. The boy's hands beat uselessly against the green murderer. Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn Cotton had chosen this. That was really all Jan could think, as the boy was suddenly outed by a vine snaking around his neck and cutting off his air. He'd run, and he'd chosen his death. At least Jan would have given him something dignified. Now? Now he could be the Tribute Killed by a Glorified Houseplant. Because Jan couldn't bring himself to give less of a frack if he suffocated right now. Felix, on the other hand... Jan came down on the vine ensnaring Felix's wrist. Apparently, he and Ember had the only weapons that did any damage to these things. Which meant... ...It meant they needed to get going. Soon. Now, would work for him. 2013-03-13 05:21:27 Jan Colton rolled 12 dice to "Silvered Machete Vine Kill-age" 2,10,3,5,2,7,8,1,9,6,4,4,2 (3 successes)

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember trusted Jan to free Felix. But then there was the issue of Cotton. Should she save him or not? And if she did save him would he just run, like last time? Ember wasn't up to go searching for him in the wood. “I'll get you out if you swear not to run and to stay and fight...” Ember told Cotton. She had every intention to cut him down either way. Either he took the honorable road or they would watch him die and Ember might help the plant finish the job. It was Cotton's choice. “Die scared gasping for air? Or give yourself a fighting chance as we all agreed?”Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Keeping an eye out for anything coming after them" 1,1,9,4,8,8,8,9 (5 successes) Ember is at full dodge

Taking Ember's advice, Lily muttered a hoarse "Thanks..." to Jan, also managing a smile in Felix's direction for his efforts, although the male had scared the living daylights out of her at first before she realized why he was swinging that axe. As the vine looped around Felix and Cotton both, Lily raised the knife Ember had given her. "Python Plant. It can only be hurt by a weapon from Cornucopia..." Lily recited, the information from the file coming back to her. But was Ember's knife that she gave to Lily one of those? Would a weapon from the Feast work? Did it mean something ridiculously specific like Jan's machete? Three very good questions that Lily had no answers to. Jan's rescue of Felix meant she didn't need to find out. Cotton, like Boomer, had made his choice already. Lily is Dodging for a Defence of 8. Lily Zelle rolled 6 dice to "Perception" 3,2,5,8,4,3 (1 successes)

"Never agreed for you all to chop Lacey and I apart and not touch each other. Your dignified death isn't fair, Ember. Good luck."
For Cotton had seen how his death would place the tributes on a time line monitored by no doubt ever annoyed Game Makers. His breath goes first as his gasping soon makes an uncomfortable choking noise. His eyes bulge and red lines of blood form in his eyes. His limbs spasm for several uncomfortable moments.
BOOM!

Felix Grayling
As the vine coils itself around Felix’s wrist, he tried his hardest not to struggle against it. For a split second, he wondered if anyone was going to help him. Wondered if they should just let him get killed by this cognitive vine. It wasn’t the way he wanted to go down, but he’d welcome it if everyone else deemed it a ‘good way to die’.
Apparently, Jan didn’t see it as a fitting death.
With a soft exhale, Felix smiled thankfully at Jan. “Thank you,” He breathed, a little disorientated from the potential death experience. He turned to Cotton, who was being strangled, and shook his head.
“Lacey died honourably, Cotton. She died fighting for your lives. You just wasted her efforts.” He said, looking down at the ground. He didn’t want to hear Cotton’s death by vine by vine described to him by his earpiece.
“We have to get going.” He said to his district partner, and the rest of the group.

As Jan's machete cut Felix free, the boy from nine noticed two vines drop off behind him. They writhe in the air, grasping towards the tributes. Jan manages to avoid the touch of these deadly plants. Isolde, however, is silently constricted by a third vine. The green plant coils around her neck, slowly turning her in a clockwise motion. Isolde is unable to speak. The color of her face suggests that breathing is becoming more difficult, perhaps impossible. In front of the procession, another sly vine has dropped down from Cotton's body. The vine coils around Ember's ankle, tugging at the small girl insistently. Glancing upwards, the shadows seem to be moving. Several feet away, another tree begins to writhe. A fifteen away suddenly begins to move, blocking the path that you had taken here. Not every vine or tree was a python, but any one could be. Python Vine 3 rolled 5 dice to "Wrestling Isolde" 10,9,8,9,4,7 (4 successes) Link 2013-03-13 19:19:05 Python Vine 1 & 2 rolled 5 dice to "Wrestling Jan" 4,6,4,3,5 (0 successes)

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Sometimes the only choice a person has is how they leave this world. Ember nodded to Cotton, pressed three fingers to her lips, and saluted Cotton. If might not be fair. But this was all they had. She almost missed the vine ensnaring her ankle. Felix's axe didn't work against it. But the silvered machete that Jan had did. And as it happened, so did Ember. She pulled it out and brought it down. In freeing herself, she couldn't save Isolde. “Izzy!” Ember yelled. But she wouldn't get there in time. Ember Clay rolled 9 dice to "chop vine" 2,6,2,10,6,5,8,3,2,8 (3 successes)

Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn"No problem, Felix. You ain't goin' out like that." Jan swallowed, moving out of the way of one of the vines, though Izzy wasn't so lucky. Apparently, the Gamemakers were being douchebags about this whole mess. If they wanted blood, they weren't going to get it this way. This was a slaughter, point blank, plain and simple. It was repulsive, and their little temper-tantrum wasn't going to make the people of Panem happy. Jan sliced through the vine constricting his District Partner. "Got ya, Big Sis."
He looked at Ember. At Felix. He says it to them, but his words are meant for the Gamemakers. "Let's get out of here and to someplace a little less hostile so we can finish this. We promised a show.

Felix GraylingFelix listened to Jan’s words, and he glanced at Sassinak. “I hope you get to go home.” He said, his voice shaky, “I love you like a sister.”Felix turned back to Jan, and he raised his axe. “I’m the only one standing in your way, Jan Colton.” Felix said, “We can finish this here.”Feeling the axe’s weight for the first time, Felix was visibly pained just by imagining hitting Jan with it. But he had to do it. He had to give the Capitol the show they had promised them. And he had to at least... Try. Even if his whole heart wasn’t in it. Even though he didn’t want to go home. Felix raised the axe, rushing forward and slashed it against Jan. He didn’t want to hit him, but the axe did apparently. It wasn’t going to kill him. Felix didn’t want to kill him. Maybe he wanted to stop him from being so pretty, though. It was the one thing that kind of irritated Felix about Jan. He was just... Too good looking. “Cut me down and go home.” Felix muttered through gritted teeth, almost inaudible. Felix Grayling rolled 5 dice to "attacking Jan" 5,5,2,6,10,7(1successes)

Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World BurnThis was it. Somewhere far away, he felt his face split open. The axe had hit him, and it was a deep cut. He knew because there was blood. He could taste it on his lips. He had no idea what that cut looked like, but he knew it wasn't superficial. It was the sort of cut that would be permanent, if he'd gotten it in District 9. Jan knew he was pretty. Jan also knew that he was vain. He knew, though, that he wasn't 'just a pretty face', and he'd get by without being pretty. He had a silver tongue too, after all. It cut across his face. Missed his eyes--thank The One--and he flipped the knife in one hand, teeth clenching and bared in a feral grimace. He almost missed it. Almost missed Felix's words. Almost. But not quite. It was why he went at him, and went at him hard and without remorse. Felix deserved that. He deserved a death that wasn't fake. That wasn't fabricated. He deserved to go out fighting, and Jan would give him that. If it were the last thing he did. The knife got Felix across the throat, and he felt the blood on his hands. it wasn't the sort of wound that would kill, but there was time enough for the both of them to get more killing blows. This was their final battle. No one elses' Jan grinned. Felt the West Wind on his face--though that could be his imagination. "Come at me, Bro."

Felix GraylingFelix seethed as the knife cut him across the throat. He almost smiled; Jan wasn’t going easy on him, and he liked that. He liked that the boy had no remorse, it made it easier to do to him what he had to. Felix admired the boy, admired the strength he possessed. He wasn’t just a pretty face, he was smart, he was clever, he was witty, and damn could the boy fight. So Felix, a little less de-motivated this time, raised his axe and lashed out. Even though he didn’t want Jan to die, he knew that the boy deserved to get back what he was giving Felix. Pretending would get them nowhere. They didn’t want to fight each other, but they had to. Felix cringed as the axe collided with Jan again. He was blind without the helmet, and his leg would probably never be useful again. He was sick of living like this, it wasn’t living. He wanted Jan to save him from this kind of a life, this horrifying existence that Brass and the Capitol had inflicted on him. Felix kept his bloodied axe raised. Felix Grayling rolled 8 dice to "attacking Jan + will" 1,9,9,6,6,1,2,8(3 successes)
