The Mentor Room for District Seven only held Aurora, Brendan, and Apple. Conrad, and Tank had yet to show up. And Rowan was in the Sponsors' Hall. "Aurora, you don't actually have to be here," Brendan told the youngest mentor.
"If Tank or Conrad comes I will excuse myself, until then..." Aurora let the sentence fade, unfinished.
"You're going to run yourself into an early grave," Brendan said.
She looked up at him. And he closed the distance between them, putting a hand on her shoulder. Aurora tried to push away from him but Brendan's grip on her shoulder tightened and to move would have been painful.
"Killing yourself won't bring your family back, Aurora," Brendan. "If you want to be a mentor, a leader... If you want to continue your... work... You have to stop thinking like a martyr. These kids don't need a martyr. They need a mentor. Can you do that?"
Aurora's lip quivered, her eyes welled with water, and she nodded. "I think so."
Brendan raised an eyebrow. "You think so?"
Aurora took a breath and found her voice again. "Only fools are positive, sir."
Brendan smiled. "Good girl." Dell was whistling to himself. He looked happy despite his situation. The Careers wanted his head on a spike but until the Bloodbath he didn't have to actively worry about it. "So... Jeanne... Before we go in there, I need to know if you're thinking about an alliance with the Careers?" Dell asked.
