After the first day of training and lunch, the tributes had a few more hours in the training center before they were told to have dinner with their mentor. Micha and Abigail joined Jace as he entered the dining room. Lyme was present, already eating a turkey leg.
She gestured for every one to sit down and begin to eat. Lyme waits a few minutes, finishing her chicken and setting the bone on her plate. The woman glances to Jace, then to Abigail and Micha. She regards them quietly for a moment before stating.
"I know we left off discussing your angles." She states. "Now that you've had a chance to see the other tributes, you can probably guess what some of theirs might be. What do you think will be most effective for you?"

Jace Colton[/u]
He took his own seat, dragging a plate of assorted berries toward himself. While most of the Tributes were gorging themselves on good meals, he'd taken to eating until he was 'comfortable', and only things that were light. Grazing rather than stuffing himself.
Being used to being hungry was one of his strengths, not one of his weaknesses, and he didn't want to forget what it felt like. He didn't want it to debilitate him in the Arena as he was sure it would eventually do to those from richer districts. Places where they always had good meals.
He'd enjoy the food, but he wouldn't make a pig of himself.
"I can see where a few of them will go." As always, soft and quiet, but with strength to it. "My stylist told me that I 'cleaned up surprisingly well' and that I have nice eyes and wonderful skin. Or something. I'm not a people-person by trade, but I can have a go at it. Maybe flirt a little bit.
"I think a few of them are in it to 'protect' other people, while others are in it for the fun of the kill. Maybe I want to be something in between that? Confident that I can win this, but at the same time not bloodthirsty?"
He bit his lip, and then popped a blueberry into his mouth. "I want them to like me. No...I want them to love me. To see their sons and brothers and cousins in me. I want them to not want me to die enough that they'll help me when I need it most.
"I've been told I'm 'nice'...and I can sing. Otherwise...I'd like a little help."

"You have some ideas." Lyme stated. "You want them to see you as your family member, to emphasize with you. I'd advise that you stay away from extremes - gloating or self - pity. Those never show well in the interviews."
She falls silent for a moment, considering.
"How do you see being nice and your ability to sing affecting how people view you?" Lyme watches Jace intently, clearly expecting some more feedback on how he wants to be seen.

"I wasn't planning on either one." He wasn't someone who was prone to either mindset. His voice was really the only thing he had that he was somewhat proud of. He didn't even brag about that so much as he just liked to sing, and knew he was good at it.
He'd never been told to stop, after all.
"I want them to see me as a real person. That's what I'm thinking. Gloating or being pathetic don't win you any sponsors. Being real...I can see that working. I could...maybe talk about life back home during my interview? I'm really not sure.
"For all we're in the Capitol, I can't say I know the people all that well. Do they like 'pretty'? Do they like 'real'? What's in fashion? I have no idea.
"I could...be myself? Not sure if they'd really relate to that too much though."

"I think being genuine is brave choice." Lyme determined. "You have to alter your behavior some what for the Capital. Engage Cesar during the interview if you can. Be seen smiling and seeming confident when you notice that you are being observed. That will help them remember you during your stay in the Capital.
Now once you are in the arena, you'll have to captivate their attention. There are many other tributes that the Game Makers could choose to focus on over you. What do you recall from the last Games that got attention?"

"I can do that. Smile and wave a little. Laugh as if I'm amused by something. I can play like that if I need to." He might not be the best liar in the world, but he could act if he needed to. "You're just basically asking me to be pleasant. I can do that."
Being pleasant isn't all that difficult.
His fingers snatched a strawberry, and he looked it over. Did it come from home? Like the strawberry wine they'd served with dinner last night? He'd recognized the label as one of the wineries in the District.
He hadn't had any. He'd been drinking orange juice and water and other things his parents had told him once-upon-a-time would keep him healthy.
"In the Arena, we saw...killing. A lot of that. They kept playing those. The little hunting parties and things. The forming of alliances." Of which he already had ....two. Altruism and Honesty. He'd call them that quietly to himself.
"...Struggling for survival seemed to get a lot of attention and....Playing to the camera. A few people did that. At least, that's what Pa would say. 'He's playing to the camera'. Especially if someone winked or waved or something. Of if you saw someone hiding and there was a hunting party nearby who bypassed him or her.
"I can do that if I need to."

"Good. Yes, some of those tributes were better at playing for the camera." She nodded. "The Gamemakers look for what people will be invested in. Fighting, conflict, mutations -" She grimaced, shaking her head. "When Bobbeh, Conrad, Chisel, Cypress, Singer and Vibrance threw in the bodies of the dead for the piranha? That was broad casted and remarked upon. Being unpredictable is a great thing to consider."
"Do you have any questions about sponsorship?"

He winced a little at that particular memory. Throwing bodies to piranha...he didn't think he could do that. They were already dead. There had been no need to....
...But then, his parents wouldn't get his body anyway. He'd never seen dead tributes brought home for a funeral, even if he'd seen some services for them. Personal things buried or burned while family said some words of remembrance.
Who knew what the Capitol did with those bodies. Maybe it would be a kindness. Dispose of the bodies someway that the Capitol couldn't have them. A little act of rebellion when there really was no way to really have one?
Could work.
"I know that I'll need them. Because one of those little balloons could save my life. How do I get them though? Or is that your thing? I play 'Smiling Happy Boy Next Door' for the Gamemakers and Cameras and Cesar, and you convince them that they want me to win?"

It was clear that Lyme viewed using the bodies as a means to distract the piranha from the tributes movements as a necessary evil in the way she commented. "It wasn't easy viewing, but it did get them on the main screen. It also allowed them to pass the piranha infested water... perhaps it even leant the air that they would do anything to survive."
"It works a bit like that, yes." Lyme smiled at 'smiling happy boy next door' comment. "I convince them that you have a real chance at winning; that you could be a victor. That you are the victor that they want. I'll likely reference what you've already done in the Arena to highlight your ingenuity or fitness to win."
One thing she also had to do, you know, was split sponsor money between three tributes. Was some earmarked as yours or did she simply choose who she thought was most likely to win?

He honestly wasn't sure what Lyme did with the funds garnered by the sponsors. Until now, he'd never considered it. There were three of them this year, and she'd either have to choose one of them who she thought could win this, or she'd have to split their money somehow....
...It was probably polite to only ask that when the girls weren't there. He was sure that eventually he'd get alone time.
One thing was certain: After he did this, and after he won, he wouldn't be looked at the same at home ever again. Not if he did what he realized he would have to do in order to get sponsors and to survive.
It was a sobering thought.
"I'll play to the camera. I'll get myself on the main-screen. I'll keep myself there." He wouldn't be slaughtering people in their sleep, but he would do what he'd have to do in order to survive. "Smile. Laugh. Wave. Be likeable. And play to the camera in the Arena.
"I can do this."
Another strawberry before he speaks again. "I've been to the knife throwing station and the medicinal and edible plants. Anything you'd recommend? I was thinking 'Shelter Building', but I was wondering if I need to 'show off' a little.
"Maybe melee weaponry?"

"Weaponry isn't a bad thing to consider." He was told. "Unless you excel at hiding; you are going to have to fight off the other tributes. Your first ten minutes in the arena will likely be the worst. The weaker ones are targeted..."
She pressed her lips. "You have chosen to ally with some younger tributes. They may be targeted right away. You also have attracted the attention of the careers, meaning you may have to decide if you're going to group up and attack him - or flee. You're going to have to decide how far you'll go to protect your alliance when so many assailants are all in one place."

"The plan is to grab the nearest pack and run for whatever cover there is, and then head north. Meet up. Whoever makes it, we'll work with what we have." Saying it that way made it sound kind of flimsy.
"Though...I've kind of got a tentative thing with that Lallek from District 4? We're going to talk some more when we can manage...but I think he might be my strongest choice in the end. The others...it's more altruism. I think my alliance with Lallek will be more equal that that, if that makes any sense at all?"

"It doesn't need to make sense. It needs to keep you alive past the first day. Then I'll do my best to help keep you alive."[/b]
She stated plainly.
"You should try and define something with Lallek as soon as you can. Leaving things to chance won't work well in the arena... odds are always against you. I think you have a good understanding on how to act for the cameras. I'll meet with some sponsors tomorrow and try to line you something to help you on the second day. "[/b]
"I think we'll set out for any woods.. or beach..." Micha stated; glancing to Abigail who nodded. "We'll be taking off right away. We can't fight at the ... we can't fight."
"I agree with you there."[/b] Lyme agreed. "You should flee immediately and try to hide. Looking into concealment - and the camouflage station - wouldn't be a bad idea."[/b]
"I also want to check out archery. Try and learn how to defend ourselves..." Micha stated, glancing uncertainly at Abigail.

There's a look to the girls. The beach or somewhere in the woods. Probably best. Part of him wanted to offer them an 'in', but at the same time he knew that it'd be for the best in the end if they stayed a part.
"My Pa told me that no matter what, don't make a fire. No matter how cold you get. Don't make a fire, because someone might see it. He'd rather see me die quietly in my sleep of cold than he would see me die on the end of a Career sword because I was just a little cold."
He shrugged a little. "Lots of archers and throwers this year if training is anything to go by. That Klo chick from the Careers? She's pretty good. Stay away from her. And an arrow goes farther than a thrown knife besides.
"It might be a good idea to learn to do something ranged. I threw a few knives and I was halfway decent at it, but I'm going with hand-to-hand and maybe a little melee training. Maybe see if I can't finagle some stealth out of this whole thing."
Then back to Lyme. "I'll catch Lallek as soon as I see him next. Either at training or at lunch. I think that's what he was getting at anyway."

" No fire." [/b] It was little Abigail's voice; soft but gravely serious. Serious as the older look in her young, pale face.
Micha listened; but she remained quiet. Her dark eyes watched Jace's face as he spoke of the field of tributes. She opens her mouth for a moment; speaking slowly and with great care.
"That will serve you well; Jace. I think we'll do our best with what we're good with. We'll stay far from the Careers. Far from the fighting."
Best intentions wouldn't keep the girls alive; but at least they would be together.
"I'll speak to Lallek's mentor. Perhaps something can be arranged. I understand the boy can't speak; so arrangements can be made that you can talk."
