The immediate north - west held greenery, the likes most of you had never seen. Strange trees with smooth brown trunks and topped with spiky green leaves swayed in the wind. Animal calls, strange and exotic, call out from the many shadows of the jungle. Green vines snake through the trees, falling out of sight.

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember was moving as quietly as she could. She put herself near but not against any of trees. She didn't want to be scooped up by one of those vines. She scanned the arena around them. Everything was just so green but she knew that the beautiful masked the jungle's dangers. This was the Hunger Games after all. “How are you holding up, Charming?” Ember asked, in a hushed voice. “Are the Games everything you'd hope they'd be and more?” She turned to look on him, her face held a playful, teasing smirk. Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn"Yes. Yes. A thousand times: Yes." He grins, his own voice low and the statement is completely deadpan. Jan knew how to work this whole thing. He also knew that the right people would see the right things. The Capitol would see a Tribute 'honored' by the Games. People like Ember? They'd see how much he really, really hated this whole mess. Not the killing--never that--but the pointlessness of it. The stupidity of it. So much potential and so many lives. Just...wasted. "I think we both know we can't stay there forever. Or...they can't." There wasn't much more to say about that whole situation back at the Factory. The Gamemakers will want blood, and they'll force the issue if someone doesn't crack. "I don't hate Felix and Sassy, but I'm not gonna die for them. Felix isn't the only one with responsibilities, and while I'm not afraid to die...?" That doesn't mean I want to. "...I'm really sorry about Jazz." He was. He liked the guy, for all he never spoke. Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember nodded when Jan spoke. She smirked, knowingly. Because if Jan and her were anything alike, he hated being her as much as she did. It wasn't the killing. Ember had been living with death her whole life. This was just a little jump forward. So she wasn't suffering from any existential crisis. Even Roger and Ford's deaths at her hands didn't bother her. Just the pointlessness of all of it. They had died for nothing. Cinder died for nothing. And maybe before this was all over her death would serve no greater purpose. Ember collected some dirt and began to camouflaging herself. She was silent as she did so, covering every portion of herself that wasn't covered in a natural color. When she was done she looked at Jan and began to do the same with them. It was only then that she spoke. “I know,” Ember said. “Broody and the others, they're good people. Maybe that's the problem. They are just going to get more of us killed in the end.” She got to his face and hesitated for a moment. She used to be better at this. Boys... it was once a simple affair. Now... She was almost awkward. Almost. “Grumpy was ours...” Ember affirmed. “And thanks to us, he'll never be one of theirs.” Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Food?" 5,2,1,2,4,2,8,4 (1 successes) Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Perception" 8,3,9,2,5,9,4,9 (4 successes) Ember Clay rolled 6 dice to "camo Jan" 9,9,3,2,8,10,4 (4 successes) Ember Clay rolled 6 dice to "camo self" 9,10,5,7,1,9,4 (3 successes)

Jan Colton; District 9's Volunteer: The Boy Who Would Watch the World Burn
"When I was...Out--" When Lacey had knocked him unconscious. "--I saw him, and I know it's stupid and was probably a dream, but he was there. Waiting. Waiting for all of us. He said something about Ford and Roger, but...I could have been hearing things. Transplanting them into the dream Part of me needs to believe that's what he's doing. That he waits for them. That he's Taking them Home, and that he was waiting for Jazz...."
It was stupid, and silly, and a moment of vulnerability he couldn't afford right now, but there it was. Even as Ember was putting mud and other things onto his skin to blend him in with the surroundings. Flesh would stand out in the jungle, but this brownish-green was everywhere. Including his face, and he definitely notices the hesitation when she got to his face.
"I haven't been clean in two or three years, Ember. A little dirt and mud isn't going change much...other than make me harder to see." He did smirk, though it didn't quite wash away the hesitation in his eyes. He hadn't had issues with girls in years. Jan had always just...been able to get what he wanted out of them since he hit the age of 12.
This nervousness...it wasn't something he was used to feeling, at all, and this definitely wasn't the place for it.
So why wasn't he moving? Why wasn't he putting a stop to it?

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember's hand hovered just above the bruise on Jan's cheek. Frozen for just a moment. Perhaps it was his words; Jan had a way with words. Perhaps it was how personal this story was. Because she knew... she didn't know how she knew but she knew that Jan didn't share like this with anyone anymore. She looked down. Ember had learned not to cry. To hold everything back. Tears were for the weak. Ember wasn't weak. She didn't cry. However, when she did finally met Jan's gaze again her grey eyes were glassy. “I want to believe,” Ember replied. “All my life I wanted to believe. But after Cinder was gone... I just didn't have any faith left. Still don't. I've learned to trust what's in front of me and my gut. That being said, I've grown to trust you, Jan. If you say you saw him and he's helping Jasper, than that's what he's doing and I'll have to thank him for that when I see him myself.” She smirked when he spoke again and shook her head. “True but it's almost a shame to cover up that pretty face of yours.” Ember teased, as she begin to apply the mud to his face. Her grin grew wider when she thought about how she was probably the envy of all of the little capitol fangirls. “There all done.”Armor: Clothes: Weapons: Gear: Hit Points: 20/ 21Willpower:4/ 6

They were far too much alike. Far too much, even as Jan watched her eyes tear up. She didn't let them fall, but they were there. For him, this past year had been torture. Watching over and over again. LIstening over and over again. They'd made him watch that 'Noble Sacrifice' again during his Tribute Interview. Someone wanted a genuine reaction out of him.
All that they'd gotten was what Ember was showing him now. Tears in his eyes, but they didn't fall. They never fell.
The Gamemakers didn't want a 'genuine reaction' out of Jan. No one wanted that. Not until he was damned good and ready.
Not until he was holding all the cards.
"I'm all muddy and dirty...but I'll bet you did a good job." He knew he was attractive. In fact, he was counting on how utterly lovely he was to get him through a lot of this. That he could talk circles and charm the pants off of people.
Still, he hadn't foreseen actually...feeling something for someone else. Not like this.
"These next few days at the very least are going to be the last of one of our lives, but I'm glad I got to know you, Ember Clay." It wasn't for the camera, but they'd likely eat it up.
"We should get moving. The last thing I want is to be too far from camp--and Izzy--the next time we see that green lightening."

Ember located a faint game trail that could have some small game on it. Some old scat declared that tracking the small badger or raccoon would that some time. Jan located a tree that was laden with mangoes, a fleshy fruit that no one remembered from their district. It would be a good source of fiber, if not very filling. As they moved among the Jungle, they thought that they could hear whispers behind them. Any searching revealed no one there...

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember giggled. The One help her, she giggled. Her eyes almost widened in surprise. She chuckled then, her voice dropping in octave lower. She wasn't one of those girls. Even if she had had a "normal" childhood, Ember Clay would have never been those girls. She could see it now, her and Jan growing up in the same district. Maybe in district 10 or 11. Or 8. Two gutter rats. Jan being the pretty boy that he is and younger than Ember to boot. She would have never given him the time of day. Or perhaps teased him mercilessly. That was more Ember's style. But surely under normal circumstances, Jan wouldn't have been classified as her type. Yet, here they were-- Here she was, looking into the intense blue eyes of his, imagining a life with Jan without the Hunger Games looming over their heads The Games brought us together... she thought, willing herself to think about something else. Anything else. And it'll be the thing that tears us apart. And that saddened her. Made her almost regret her decision to volunteer. However, it was that choice that brought her into Jan's life. And there was a part of Ember that thanked the One for that small blessing. In this horrible place, Jan was a reminder of why life was so precious and also why the Hunger Games was so pointless. Ember meet Jan's gaze once more. And leaned in. She had a feeling the cameras were on them. And she thought to herself, "what would Jan do?" She smirked and kissed him. Now they had everyone's attention for sure. “Me too, Jan Colton,” she replied, with her forehead still pressed against his. Ember chuckled and leaned back, focusing on the task at hand. “You see this,” Ember said, pointing to the game trail. “It's faint. And the game is small. Probably not enough to feed us all. So I'm going to throw up a snare to see if we can lure it back here.” Ember worked quickly with the snare because Jan was right, they needed to get moving. Now. “I want to search for a water source while we're here too. And I'm going to see if there's something bigger we can track around here” Ember said, keeping her voice low. She had a feeling they were being followed. So she wanted to get this over with and she wanted to get back to the Factory. “I need something to bait the snare with... Break me off a piece of one of those packed lunches... Please...” Ember Clay rolled 7 dice to "Moving Silently" 3,4,5,10,8,7,8,6 (3 successes) Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Looking for a source of water" 6,9,3,8,4,8,2,8 (4 successes) Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Perception" 9,6,7,9,10,10,5,1,8,1 (5 successes) Ember Clay rolled 9 dice to "Snare" 5,4,1,8,10,1,6,8,8,4 (4 successes) Ember Clay rolled 9 dice to "tracking (looking for better game)" 1,1,5,5,7,7,9,10,10,2,3 (3 successes)

As Ember moved through the Jungle, she felt relatively safe in the thought that no one had heard her. Yet this jungle was oppressively hot and sweat dotted their brows. Moistness seemed to cling to every inch of their bodies. As Ember worked at setting a snare, the sounds of exotic birds floated through the air. Something made a sharp call above their heads. Looking up, they spotted a pair of macaws, brightly colored birds that circled above their heads before landing in the tree above. As Ember continued to set her snare, the birds made their loud calls. In the absence of their noise, Ember thought that she heard a whisper.
As she turned around and studied the Jungle, all was as it was. Yet... no, that shadow by the tree where several vines formed a curtain was darker and larger. As she studied it, a snorting noise came from the shadows. Something hairy and brown flashed through the opening in the vines. It was the backside of some animal that was about a foot high.
Searching for water proved difficult. If one walked several minutes through the jungle, a rushing noise could be heard coming from the Hidden City. The ground near here was flecked with rubble from larger stone buildings. This ground, if crossed, would become the entrance to the Hidden City from the Jungle. The rushing water noise was coming from the Hidden City.

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Water was coming from the Ruined City. Where the careers were. Perfect. Just perfect. It was something to commit to memory. Something she'd tell Jan about later. When they weren't hunting. Her playful smirk was gone however. And now Ember was a wolf on a hunt. And she had caught the scent of fresh game. Some kind of hog, she assumed... or rather hoped. After Ember had drank from her waterskin, she brought a finger up to her lips, facing Jan and told him to be quiet without any words. Then she pointed to where he was standing and indicating she wanted him to stay low and stay there while she flanked the snorting creature. Notch... Draw... Aim... Loose... she thought, as she silently made her way toward the creature. Just like Cindy taught you. She moved quietly through the woods, trying to keep her focus on tracking the creature, as while as keep an eye out for any dangers. Ember Clay rolled 8 dice to "Perception" 1,10,8,5,4,3,9,1,6 (3 successes) Ember Clay rolled 7 dice to "moving silently" 3,2,10,10,8,7,1,10,9,1 (5 successes) Ember Clay rolled 9 dice to "tracking" 1,4,2,4,3,2,5,9,8 (2 successes)

As Ember was preparing for her shot, she heard something to her left. Quietly turning her head, she noted a small tribute sized figure hurriedly moving away, towards the Ruined City. The figure was small, about Lily's size. Perhaps one of the females who had fled early on, such as Savannah and Galen. There was no sign of the person returning as Ember paused, listening for signs of return.
When she was certain no one was approaching, the tribute from district twelve was able to concentrate on her hunt. The small snorting animal remained rooting around between three trees that were largely shadowed by vines. The animal paused and loudly snorted, testing the air with its wrinkled and wet snout that peered out of the vine - cave.

Another boy might be shocked. He knew Jace would have been. Jan though? It was hardly his first time a girl kissed him, and the cameras were on them--he knew they were at this point. So?
He kissed back.
And then raised his eyebrows and a finger to point up before he winked, still grinning. "Mangos."
Retrieving them would be a feat, but they weren't going anywhere, and Jan listened as Ember pointed out the game trail. It was a useful thing to know, how to track animals. Hunting wasn't something they did much of back home, but Jan figured knowing how couldn't hurt.
He wasn't the best at 'quiet', but he could shut his mouth and not move. That wasn't so hard.
Then they could climb the tree--or throw a rock or something up there--and get the mangos down.

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” She was smirking. Not her usual, cold hollow smile. But one that said plainly she was pleased with herself. But not too pleased to notice someone running by her. Ember nodded toward Jan and without words try to tell him to keep his eyes open. Whoever passed her wasn't a threat just yet. Ember held her pose and waited for the better shot. The kill shot. Ember's gonna hold to take an aiming action at the snout. As Ember took her time with aiming, the small pig continued to root around the jungle floor. Its snout dipped down to the ground as it rooted, lining up a shot with the pig's head. Ember felt that she had an excellent shot on the small creature. The small tribute that Ember had seen did not return. The wind in the Jungle picked up causing the trees to make sighing and whistling sounds as the green, spiky leaves moved. The macaws above fluttered their wings and protested loudly with their exotic calls.
As Ember focused on her shot, Jan noticed a fat rain drop land on the leaf of the mango tree that he was studying. Another followed and Ember and Jan shivered. The heat that had caused them to perspire was retreating, causing them to start to feel chilled as the temperature dropped. Within moments, the temperature had dropped ten degrees. Glancing about, one might notice a white fog forming at the barrier to the Ruined City.

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” It was a good rule of thumb, that when the Arena starts doing weird stuff (i.e. white fog, green lightning, etc) you find yourself an elsewhere to be. Ember had seen too many games not to know what was supposed to happen next. And she wouldn't be surprised if the Gamemakers were secretly gunning for them. No doubt Ember and Jan's kiss had a lot of them scratching their heads. That tickled her pink. The thought that the Gamemakers were trepidatious when it came to these two. Ember Clay took a deep breath and let it out, as she did she fired and waited for the conformation of the kill before she turned to Jan. “Green lightning and fog... Time to head back.” Ember Clay rolled 11 dice to "shooting small animal" 8,1,8,1,1,6,10,3,5,1,2,5 (3 successes)

"Let's get the pig, get the mangoes, and get back." Because the Arena doing weird stuff was a sure sign that it was time to find cover, and frankly he didn't want to be around when whatever was going to happen, happened.
"It's raining." Best be getting back before things start burning. Acid sucked.
And Jan had the feeling that this was the Gamemakers not liking Jan and Ember. HOw many hopeless romantics were swooning over their doomed 'love affair' right now? How many people couldn't stand the thought that one of them might have to kill the other?
The Capitol didn't like when you f***ed with their fun, and Jan and Ember were definitely doing just that. The One forbid the people of the Capitol see them as anything other than lambs for the slaughter.
"We still have Careers to deal with."

Ember Clay: District Twelve Female Tribute, “The Girl Who Loved to Play with Fire” Ember roped up boar and dragged it over to Jan. "I agree. Hold on to this; I'll get the mangoes." She handed the pig to Jan and dropped most of her gear save for the knife between her teeth. Her climbed the tree as if she was a citizen of District Seven. It came with years of being a hunter and going beyond the border fence. She retrieved the mangoes and slid back down. The mangoes went into the backpack. And the pig she took back from Jan, before she put on her gear again. "The careers... At least this'll be the last time any of us have to deal with them..." On that morbid quip, Ember started back toward the Factory. Ember Clay rolled 6 dice to "Climbing" 9,6,10,2,8,4,3 (3 successes) Armor: Clothes: Weapons: Gear: Hit Points: 20/ 21Willpower:4/ 6

Ember managed to cleanly kill the boar with a shot through the lungs, causing the boar to expire in a few moments. The girl from district twelve collected seven mangoes; having a bit of trouble carrying them all down in her hands on her descent. As she was securing the mangoes, the two tributes heard an odd noise.
This sound wasn't a noise often heard in districts nine or twelve. The more that they considered it, the more that they were certain that it sounded like a predator's yowl. One was reminded of the Blood Panther mutation that the tributes of the past hunger games had to contend with. It certainly lent urgency to ones' steps.
