District One shined like a gleaming star. Luminous but nowhere near the splendor to the Capitol. Which was described by many that ventured there as an ocean of light.
The day before the Reaping was always an exciting one. After Riven Tanzanite's performance in last year's Games, some of it's citizens were thinking that she might have been onto something.
“Riven Tanzanite had a good idea. She played up the honorable warrior angle and people just ate it up.”
“It's how the Natural Alliance Districts always conduct themselves. At least in recent years. And they receive a lot of camera time... And sponsor money.”
“Except that Jan Colton...”
“Oh, yes. Now there's a Victor that knew how the Games should be played.”
There were people in the square working to make it presentable for the Reapings tomorrow. District One had the resources to make the square shine. And they wanted the other Districts to know how well off they were.

"Jace Colton... is that the one who quit when his district four buddy went bananas? I can never keep them straight." Obsidian Stone, age eighteen and two years ago a prime contender for the male volunteer drawled. Crystal & Obsidean's brother, Tanzanite Stone, had been a volunteer in the 23RD Hunger Games.
"Jan Colton, knows how the Games should be played..." He snorted. "Darling, you play like him and I'll whip your butt." He spoke to his seventeen year old sister walking beside him.
"What aspect did you hate?" Crystal asks her brother. He was her trainer and she was nearly always in his company. "I rather like the part where he won."
"The part where he made a non - aggression alliance, took weapons and gear - and handed it to the group who Brass was well on his way to decimating. Two - faced little snot." Obisidian snorted. "Brass hamstrung and blinded someone; then chopped off Sassinak's arm. Shouldn't we aspire to be that?" He asked the speaker. "Natural alliance? You forget district 1 has never been a part of that?"
"Who are they again?" Crystal calmly asked the speaker. "District seven, district nine...district eleven and twelve?"
"Aren't they all best friends, cantawaling around and visiting each other's families after the slaughter? Felix was killed by the Colton boy, but did I hear he visited the house and was greeted with open arms."

On the night of the eve of the Reaping, most good, impressionable tributes were off getting in extra training - pathetic, if you weren't good enough now, you were dead already - or resting up for the events of tomorrow. Unlike those gits, Jaeger Thorn knew he was good enough but he simply didn't care. Tomorrow was the last reaping he'd be eligible for. Tomorrow he hit 18. By a lovely loophole, he'd be old enough to register next year, but be rendered INeligible on the Day of Choosing. Sheer perfection.
He knew he was fast, agile and accurate - the ease in which he ran from the people he pranked was a sign of that. The ease in which he bounced a small ball off the adjoining building and returned it effortlessly to his hand was a sign of that. The mark on said building from years of having rocks thrown at it... yeah, sign of that.
In truth, Jaeger was bored as heck. His pranks? Blowing off steam. As a pair of people sat under his tree idly discussing the games, Jaeger frowned as one of them started praising a former Victor from another district. That wasn't very loyal, but on the plus side, he'd found his next victim...
He stopped in aiming his rock at the person's head as two people rounded the corner below. Perhaps he didn't need a rock when he had two Stones instead. He smiled as the Stone male laid his opinion of Jan bare for all to see. He admired those who spoke their mind. That and it made it easier to pull their strings when you knew how they ticked.
"You couldn't aspire to lick the dirt from Jan's boots!"
The words were Jaeger's. The voice was of the Colton lover below. The origin sounded like it was from the Colton lover below. Ventriloquism combined with a touch of mimicry. Neat trick, huh?

"The fu-" Obsidian turned sharply, squaring his shoulders for a fight. "Did he come here?"
Crystal turned around in place, glancing down the square. "No entourage." She shook her head, looking back to her brother. "Swore that sounded like that kid."
Following the line of sight for the rock, she glanced upwards.
"Hello." She stepped closer to the tree. "You must hear all of the juicy gossip up there."

"Aye, and a great deal of idiots as well." Jaeger scoffed, descending rapidly from the tree. This time his voice was projected in a mockery of the other man's voice from across the square.
"Oh I love Jan Colton, and one day if I'm really lucky, he might ditch the harlot he's with and marry me instead."
Jaeger switched back to his normal voice. "Feckless idiot that guy... this is District 1. It's about time we cut a great bloody swathe through this year's competition and reminded them just who they're dealing with."

"Personally, I think its time we look back on the greats." Crystal stated. "The people who dominated the field. I don't want to have any non aggression pieces of crap. I mean, did you see this years Games? Did any one die before the third day?"
"District ten and eight had the stones." Obsidian spoke to the tree. "Obsidian Stone, son of Thespian Stone, Sponsor. Brother of Tanzanite Stone, tribute of the 24th Hunger Games." He flashed a winsome smile. "So I'd love to see seven lose some body parts. Maybe nine if they don't shut up. Certainly Four."
"I told you," Crystal rounded on Obsidian, angrily. "- you don't decide my alliances, xenophobe."
Crystal looked upwards again. "So I take it you'd be a hell of an arm in the Games."

Jaeger jumped the last foot out of the tree, landing nimbly on the ground in front of Crystal.
"Alliances are all good and well while they last, but it's knowing when to walk away before they become a liability. My father told me one Games they formed a huge alliance... only to walk right into an explosive booby trap the Victor left for them. It's all about finding the right balance." Jaeger paused.
"Or getting someone else off balance, and giving them that last little push..."

"I think its time to create a truly formidable alliance. There's nothing wrong with being honorable and treating your alliance mates well." For some reason, she glanced to her brother when she said this. "Who would you choose?" She asks Jaeger.
"I'm not keeping it a secret that I plan on volunteering tomorrow. I plan on building a hell of an alliance and making the Blood Bath a Blood bath, not a tea party where we all respect each other." She winked at Jaeger.
"Respect is earned. You're pretty ... unique, with that mimicry skill you got there. Could you imagine how awesome that would be in a jungle? Or a field of corn or something?"
Crystal smiled. "I'm Crystal, female volunteer for the 28th Hunger Games. Whats your name?"
