Hello!
I am writing a story of the 30 - 35th Hunger Games to be shown to the writers two months before the 36th Hunger Games. This enables the writers to include hunger games events and history into thier character's lives and history. While I was writing Day 1, I hit upon a problem that many characters that were Mental or Social Primary hit large problems in the beginning of the Game before sponsor gifts.
This has made me want to try out two new Hunger Games aspects. The first is a Training Center event where trainers show the tributes a specific color that applies to them. The trainers and mentors work with Game makers to place items in the arena that would help each tribute - a fisherman with high crafts, survival and stealth needs different items than a very intelligent tribute with low survival skills but whom posesses excellent mental skills.
At the end of the training center, those who attend this training station get a free 'cache' of five items placed in level 1 or level 2 of the arena.
The second aspect is designed to help tribute who have Mental and Social primary skill sets. These tributes may not want to approach the Blood Bath or Feast, but still need gear to prove their skills and have a chance to earn sponsor money. There will be lock boxes designed to unlock after a certain challenge -extended roll - is made. These lock boxes will contain food, water, survival and shelter items to help tributes survive. I feel that if you bring in a medic, a genius or a clever mechanic you should have a fair chance at gear.
I'll be posting five of the lock box challenges in this thread after work. I'll be attempting them with five of my past non - Physical primary characters. If you would like to make a quick little character, go ahead and submit the character in here and try your hand at the rolls. I want the challenges to be a challenge, but I don't want them to be too hard or too easy. Seeing the percentage of tributes able to access the lockbox would help me out greatly.
What do I need to do to practice & play the challenges?:
All you need is to submit Attributes and skills of a character (non Phys primary, please!). Once I approve the character, you make the extended roll as though your character is participating in the challenge in the Game. No writing needed!
I will have a Str + Athletics challenge as well, just to be fair for the physical characters (and to keep them somewhere else while you're winning these lock boxes!) In my mind, I have four lockboxes designed for Intelligence and Mental skills & four lockboxes for Manipulation + Social skills. The social challenges will feature some interaction with other characters and possible npcs.
Challenges- the italic text is presented to the tribute in the arena.
The Challenges
Mental Challenges:
Can you compute?
In a past hunger games, a tribute gained access to shelter and surveilance equipment by surpassing a computer access terminal. You are presented with a computer that stands between you and a safe place for the night and some valuable gear.
Intelligence + Computers, 5 rolls
Crafts
Resting on the lock box is a needle and thread, a water - treated canvas cloth, a roll of duct tape and four stable well shaped pieces of wood. Construct something that will aid you in staying dry in a rain storm.
Physical Challenges:
Hot Water
Two cords are suspended over crocodile infested waters. The tribute must walk across the cord holding the cord above one's head OR climb atop of the top cord and pull themselves across.
Roll: Strength + Athletics 5 rolls
Survivalist's Challenge:
In this area surrounding this lock box, there are three medicinal plants. Please gather them and place them before the lock box to complete the challenge. For additional gear, state what each medicinal plant does.
Dice Pool: Wits + Survival + equipment
Action: Extended (five successes required; one roll represents one hour of searching)
Lock - picking
The lock box in this challenge possesses a lock of medium complexity. Basic lock picks are laid on the lock box, providing a +1 modifier.
Roll: Extended 8 successes required, extended roll.
Social Challenges:
Can I have that?
In the arena, tributes may live and die by the gear in their packs. In some situations, alliances are separated or split suddenly and that gear is lost to you. In this challenge, we need you to convince someone to part with something in their pack. It has to be gained through the mark handing you the item and not through theft or deceit. Place the gained item before the lock box to gain access to the cache.
Roll: Manipulation & Persuasion vs tba 5 rolls
Animal training
Action: Extended and contested (the task demands
a number of successes equal to the opponent's Willpower;
each roll represents one day of training)
Training an animal involves communicating a need,
encouraging a type of behavior and/or discouraging un-
wanted behavior . It's an extended and contested process.
Make Composure + Animal Ken + equipment rolls for
the trainer . Roll Stamina + Resolve for the animal. The
number of successes that each participant seeks is equal
to the other' s Willpower dots. Thus, if a trainer has 5
Dice Pool: Composure + Animal Ken + equipment
(trainer) versus Stamina + Resolve (animal) 5 rolls
The Challengers:
Buttercup
Kelly's Character
Helen
Pearl
Sorrel
Cypress Woodward (Our physical primary tester)
