District One
Kali was giving them nothing of use. She was a skilled warrior that was true. But there was no information that could be of use.
Kaliani “Kali” Maris rolled 1 dice to "Chance Die for Subterfuge GO!" 10 (1 successes)
Her district partner was obviously not a warrior. He had thrown himself into the Games out of love for a boy he may ever well never see again. And he wasn’t a warrior. Not in the way District Four Tributes usually were.
Quiana is a runner. Built for speed. She has resolve. She could push through the games by sheer force of will.
Quiana Lisle rolled 1 dice to "hiding in plain sight" 8 (1 successes)
Crystal had gotten nothing from Ephraim on her second look. Stoic didn’t even begin to describe this boy.

Dinah Beryl rolled 4 dice to "hiding in plain sight" 4,7,3,10,1 (1 successes)
Crystal rolled 4 dice to "District 9 female Empathy" 2,2,9,1 (1 successes)
The District Twelve Tributes were young. 14 and 13 respectively. Crystal and Jaeger would see the way they moved. Like wolves on the hunt. Low, quiet. The tributes were important somehow to their mentor, Ember. But both of them would see something in a tribute that the other did not. Crystal could draw the conclusion that the female tribute was a hunter. And Jaeger could see the same thing only in regards to the boy.
Jaeger Thorn rolled 6 dice to "D12M" 10,4,1,10,2,8,7,7 (3 successes)

The tributes’ display… if were any other crowd… But this was the Hunger Games and the crowd roared. Bronze, District One’s only male mentor seemed pleased. As did Karrigan. Diadem… well she was a tough read. Which is why she won her games. No one knew what she was capable of until it was too late. Each of her mentors won through subterfuge, and cunning. Would Crystal and Jaeger do the same?

“Look at the District Three male…” Bronze whispered. “You could scare him. The girl from Eight as well. Look for the weakest links. When you start to thin out the herd, remember them.”
“If you kill the boy, the girl from three will flee. Same for the boy from eight,” Diadem added.
Karrigan grinned. “You could begin the rivalry between the Career Alliance and this so-called Natural Alliance. Scare the boy from District Seven. He’s weak. And there is no fear from reprieve because his district mate is insane.”
Karrigan nodded before she turned to the ground. As District One’s first mentor, she was the Jan Colton of her time. With one small difference: Jan was an uncut diamond. Karrigan was flawless. And she was well loved.
“I love the Capitol this time of year,” Karrigan proclaimed to the crowd. “It’s been a year and I’ve missed you all so much.”
“WE LOVE YOU KARRIGAN!!!” a group of teenaged boys called out to her.
She smiled back and blew them a kiss. “And I love you… But we didn’t come here for me. How do you like my tributes this year? Riven could have won. But she was too
noble.”
There was a pointed look thrown Jan’s way and if he caught it she’d smile and nod her head, urging him to say something to her.

“District Two is coming,” Diadem informed them.
District Two
District Two.
Silver, commonly known in his district as the First Victor, stepped off the train with a regal air to him. Arrogant some would call it. But Silver had earned that arrogance. He won the games without an alliance. He never showed himself to be weak and he was rewarded.
Reginald was next and played to the camera as if he was born to do it. Some of his fan swooned when he waved to them.
“Ladies… did you miss me?”
Silver shot him a look and Reggie’s smile grew wider as he stepped aside for their male tribute.
Tiberius’ sheer size was intimidating. He about 6’5 feet tall and built like a brick wall. Black hair, dark eyes scanned the crowd, looking for any signs of weakness.
Livia walked off next, with Verity following her. Both women were stunningly beautiful. Not like Karrigan. No way near Karrigan (who looked angelic), but the two women were beautiful.
Verity looked like Livia only 20 years younger. But where Livia looked every bit like the Amazon goddess that she was, Verity did not. Her pale skin and dark features marked her as a citizen of District Two, however, she looked like some of the past District One tributes, beautiful and only slightly deadly. District One’s strength was that they knew how to work a crowd. District Two… they were good at making the Games bloody.
Silver offered stepped back and offered Verity a hand as she stepped down. He presented both Tiberius and Verity to the crowd.
“Panem,” Verity said with a smile. “I’ve never been to the Capitol but it feels like I’ve always belonged. Thank you all for your support. I hope to join our First Victor, whose kill record has only been tied but never broken. By one Ember… Clay, who had help. So much help. Silver won on his own. And Livia, the Victor of the Sixth Games. She is credited for starting the Career Alliance. She is our version of Aurora Noland, only an actual warrior and not some glorified bookworm. And lastly, Reginald, the Victor of the Tenth Hunger Games. He had an alliance as well, but when there was only him an alliance mate left, he broke her neck just as easily as he ran through a tribute with sword during the bath.
“Panem! The Victors of District Two!”
“Verity, who do you think the victor crown will go to this year?”
She smiled, glancing at Silver. “To the strongest.”

“Who do you want to approach first?” Livia asked Verity.
“District One, obviously. Those tributes look like they would make for good alliance mates,” she replied.
“Nothing like Riven,” Tiberius added.
Silver nodded. “Riven fought valiantly, Riven fought nobly, Riven fought bravely. And Riven died. Something to consider.”
“And District Four?” Reginald asked.
“The boy is no warrior. The girl… if we ally with them we could lose sponsors,” Verity replied.
“Clever,” Silver commented.
“Thank you, First Victor,” Verity said politely.
Livia looked over to District Four. “I would watch them. Remember Zale’s performance in the Arena. District Four is as proud as they are unorthodox.”
“Could we approach District One here?” Verity asked. “It might work to our advantage to give the Capitol want they really want; a true career alliance.”
Livia nodded and Reginald looked to Silver who also nodded.
“It’s your and Tiberius’ games,” Livia said. “If you think it’ll help sway the odds, do it.”
“Oh, goodie. A pow-wow with District One,” Reginald said.
Silver smirked. “I have good relations with some of District One’s mentors.”
Verity and Tiberius looked confused.
Reginald explained. “Diadem hates him.”
“Diadem thinks she’s some noble warrior. She’s the one that filled Riven’s head with some sense of honor,” Silver said. “It doesn’t matter how you play the game so long as you win.”

Karrigan smiled and the two embraced.
“A word, Karrigan if I may,” Silver said escorting her inside. Livia and Bronze followed.
Bronze nodded to Jaeger and Crystal. “We’ll talk more in the apartment. Diadem will handle any questions you have before we meet again. May the odds be ever in your favor.”
Reginald grinned at Diadem. “Hi. How’s it going?”
Diadem all but ignored him.
Verity is the one that stepped forward, offering a hand to both Jaegar and Crystal. “Hello, I’m Verity Nero. And this is my district partner, Tiberius Valerius. You’re Crystal Stone and Jaeger. You both were very memorable. Tye and I couldn’t stop watching your district’s reaping. Amazing.”
Tiberius shrugged.
Verity chuckled. “Tye’s a boy of few words.”
District Three
District Three stepped off the train. Brass had taken Ana. Jasper had Billy. The tributes looked like they hadn’t had a good meal in years. Ana was small, she looked like she was years younger. Bill was skinny, you could see his bones.

“It’s okay, Ana… Jasper and I will be with you the whole time,” Brass said.
“But not in the Arena?” she asked.
“No, after what happened last year the Victors won’t go into the Arena unless we’re reaped,” Brass replied honestly.

“Careers are especially scary this year,” Billy told Jasper. “How did you win?”
“The Careers are predictable. They do the same thing every year. Even when they do switch it up it’s the same play,” Jasper said. He still looked young. He was just a year older than Aurora and Jan. But he was a wiser mentor; not as reactionary as them. “I pretended to be weak so the Careers left me alone. Then it was just a manner of waiting them out and picking up the stranglers.”

Hyperion frowned. “You’re a mentor now Zale. You have to carry yourself like one. You’re not a priest here. You’re a Victor. Don’t forget that.”
Coraline sighed. “Perhaps this isn’t the best place for this discussion. Hyperion perhaps you should go to the Sponsors’ Hall and speak to our usual sponsors. You can take Nettle with you. It’s about time he learns how to do this. Zale and I can manage here.”
Zale, Dylan, and Kali would notice how the mentors had dropped their accents (Well, Hyperion lost his years ago. But Coraline and Nettle. They were still of the sea. To them that was all a part of the game.
The junior mentor (despite being two years older than her) looked at Coraline and took a deep breath. “Okay. Just… be careful with this one.” He nodded toward Zale. “And call if you need anything.”
Nettle smiled to Kali and Dylan. “Don’t worry,” he told them. “I’ll see you again very soon. You’re in good hands with Coraline and Zale. They are good people.”

Coraline would have said something. Perhaps telling Dylan that he had the right approach and guiding Kailani to a more middle of the road. She didn’t have to play the holy warrior just yet. But she didn’t say anything, because it was at that exact moment that Morgan walked off one of the trains.
“The Moon of my Life,” he called to him. “Did you think I would not see you through this crucible? You are He Who Is Made for Me. I would follow you to the ends of the earth.”
District Five
Harmony stepped off of the train with Tydall and Cypher.
Cypher had that coin in his hand, still flipping around on his knuckles. Tydall was silent. Neither played to the crowd. And Harmony didn’t push them. They’d talk later.
District Six
Olivia Tully was the first to step off the train without her son. She looked like a person drowning. Mel put a hand on her shoulder.

“He’ll be safe in District Four. After all he was born there. The Sea flows through his veins,” she told him.
Lorne took a deep breath. “Don’t talk like them, Olivia. I know you respect District Four. I do too. But we can’t show any weakness.”
Olivia glanced at him. “And perhaps that’s why we’re still doing this. We’ve been so concerned with putting on a show that we’ve never stopped to think this is wrong.”

“You could try and make friends like Caleb did,” Olivia said, her throat closing up. “Or you could do what Ember Colton did and just kill everyone. It’s up to you. We’ll talk about your strengths and weaknesses later. Just breathe. This is the hardest part. Once you’re in the Arena it’s easy to focus. It’s all this waiting that kills you.”
“So we don’t have to talk to anyone? Or pander to the crowd?” Ewan asked.
“I didn’t,” Olivia replied with a shrug. “And no you don’t have to.”

“THE NATURAL ALLIANCE!”
“NATURALS! NATURALS!” the crowd chanted.
Aurora hung back with the other mentors and watched Jeanna. “How are we supposed to help her? Help them?” She looked around. “Where’s Udell?”
Brendan ventured forward toward Jeanna. “Jeanna, follow us inside.”
They were stopped by someone saying Dell’s name.
“Why did you volunteer for Wistar Noland, Udell?”
Dell smiled. “Just Dell, ma’am. Never much cared for the name Udell. Was bullied because of my funny name. And one thing I learned by having a name like Udell is that there’s one thing I won’t tolerate and that’s bullies… Good day to you all.”
“But you didn’t answer my question.”
Dell’s grin brightened. “Didn’t I?”

District Eight
Crater Tilden stepped of the train worse for wear. What was known about dear Crater was that he was a cunning tribute. One that used his knowledge of chemistry to kill everyone by allowing them to kill each other over the limited water supply due to him polluting the only source of fresh water in the games. What no one knew was that Crater survived because he had built up a slight immunity to specific poison he used. But it wore on his body. He was a shell of what he once was. He’d have another 15 years, 20 maybe. Less if he if the odds were in his favor.

“She died…” the girl told him.
“But she died right,” Crater said. “The Victor that took her life honored and respected her to the end. She embraced her as a friend. You think that being a Victor is easy; that it’s the best outcome. But look around you, we’re the walking dead. We all died in the Arena. Every single one of us. Even the Career Victors. We all lost something or someone. Sometimes the only choice a person has is how they die.
“You can’t choose to be born. But you can choose how you leave this world.”
Carden, the male tribute nodded. “The One gives us what was can handle. No more. No less.”
Quiana waved to some of the fans of District 8. There weren’t a great many of them. It had been almost 25 years since District 8 had its first and only victor.
Carden was stoic reserved. Someone trying to perhaps capture the spirit of last year’s victors.

Dinah and Ephraim allowed Jan to sell their image. They were both volunteers so whatever they did here would only help their chances. They play aloof, they’ll think they’re like Zale. If they were foul mouthed and loud yet murderous, Ember. If you were charming… You’d be their mentor, Jan Colton.

Ephraim nodded. “So, what do you want to do first?”

Cane Anders and Gosling Brooks, the mentors for District 10 stepped off the train with a cigarette hanging on their lips. The tip up their hats and waved to the crowd. Cane was doing it because that was the way of things. Gosling? He loved the attention.

“Ooo-wee!” Zach said, tipping up the hat on his head. “I love the smell of Capitol in the Morning. Show us some ruttin’ support! We’re District 10.”
Cane handed Jess a whip and told the peacekeepers to clear space and that they could have the whip afterwards.

“Oh, I shouldn’t have? Really? Where were they supposed to go? They don’t have any grandparents. Mine are dead. And weren’t worth their weight in coal. Charming’s folks are gone too,” Ember replied. “They need to see my sons. If these idiots love them, even she can’t take that away from me.”
“Be careful when you play with fire Ember,” Hiriam warned and J.J. cooed.
“When I play with fire?” Ember asked. “I am fire. Living breathing flame, Old Man. They should be careful when they play with me. Because of this… I’ll be gettin’ my pound of flesh. You better believe it.”
Tyson touched Ember’s arm. “It’s okay, Ember. I just want you to take care of Kindle and my folks.”
Wren nodded. “Me too, Ember. I saw what you did for Jasper. People say that you’re a butcher. But you did what I couldn’t. It’s okay.”

It was a song just as old as the Hunger Games. If not older. It could mean many things to a lot of different people. But to the citizens of District 12 this was a song that laid out their struggled throughout the Dark Days.
The roar of the crowd was overwhelming to Ember and she staggered Hiriam caught her by the arm.
“Are you okay?”
