Hi there! So this is my first post on here, and I wasn't sure if this was the right place. So, I have been looking at the character professions and I might need some help on how to build them up. So I think I'd like to go with cop, but I don't really know where to go from here. This is a completely new style to me so I am quite like a lost cause, but I really want to do this . Sorry for being so clueless!

Okay. So character creation. this is not the only way but its not a bad starting point.
Start by fleshing out your idea. proffession is a good starting point but flesh your character out in your head.
Then once you have an idea of your character think about how your character prefers to solve problems. Do they prefer to punch things? To solve puzzles or talk to people? Very broadly that is your primary stats group. Then decide which of the other two is your 'weak point' that is your tertiary group.
repeat the same sort of thought process when you look at the individual stats, consider that 2 dots is average, 1 dot is poor, 3 dots is above average and 4 dots is exceptional.
When you look at skills rather than dividing it I would first say put a couple of points in those skills you consider absolutely vital for your character (i.E. Investigation, firearms, streetwise... whatever) then run through thinking about which type of skills best fit your characters and apply the pool of points to those skills (including those spent prior).
Do look over both the stats and skills careful and make sure they do what they want you think they do.
Traits are very unique and I can't really give a simple answer other than look over them carefully.
