The shrieks of Bay still echoing in his ears, Tank felt nothing for the girl left to the merciless hospitality of the Careers. She wasn't one of his own and they had enough people to worry about as it was. With the Careers hopefully not following Tank slowed his pace, taking the opportunity to look inside the scavenged backpacks and check their contents as he jogged behind the others.

As the group breaks into the forest, Lallek moves towards the outskirts. He is careful to keep them in sight, but maintains twenty paces between him and the others. He and Jace had an alliance but these others were merely friends of a friend. There was no great love for them. For now, Lallek trusted Jace to take care of explaining the situation.
Once the group begins to slow, Lallek slides a throwing knife into his boot. After that he begins to rub dirt and mud onto himself. The clothes were too colorful and bright. His hair was too clean. It was messy but necessary and he repeats the process with his bag.

Bay's cries grab Rory by the gut. Her conscience fights her body's will to survive, begging her to stop and help Bay. But she can't stop. If she stops she dies. And the Alliance still needs her. So Rory presses on, noting in passing that if she survives this is going to haunt her as well. She slows to a light job, before ducking behind a tree, listening. She hears just the sound of her people... or at least she hopes are her people. Rory's hand reaches for one of her throwing axes. She still has nine. She knows to use them wisely.
She cringes as she moves out in the open. The cuts on her arm and knee sting but the true pain hasn't set in. At least not yet. "Is everyone alright? How's Pearl?"
Rory's concern is hidden behind her commanding presence. She needs to know the situation before she cooks up what they were going to do next.

Now that you have cleared the snowy tundra, you find that the temperature here is about 60 degrees. You begin to sweat in your fleece jacket...
The Forrest around you is flecked by old trees. Further in you see the shadows grow and the trees become more dense. Here there are some open areas beneath the tree, and the occasional fallen log and rock.
As Tank looks within Ghislaine's bag, the first thing he finds is a folded blue tarp. Beneath that is canteen, with a metal cup that fits within the bottom of the canteen. The canteen is empty. Examining Elsie's bag, he finds a coil of rope - perhaps twenty feet. She also had the hunting knife that Tank found beside her. "I'm over here." A small voice calls at Rory's question. Nearly twenty feet away Pearl sits upon a rock. She has torn off the sleeve of her fleece jacket and used it as a bandage upon her leg. Her pack sits beside her foot; her sword across her lap. Rachel stands beside her; holding her single bladed axe. Rachel glances at your group warily.
You note that Rachel had been examining her empty canteen at your approach, she lowers it in her off hand now.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine loped into the forest after the alliance, pausing as she caught up with the alliance. She did a quick headcount, and realized she didn't entirely know who all was in the alliance outside of those she'd directly met. She sucked a gentle breath in, wiped her forehead with the back of her hand and touched her shoulder. It was starting to throb, but was far from unbearable. She stopped near Rory and proceeded to unzip her fleece. Compared to the tundra they'd just left, this was a sauna, though she figured she might be zipping it back up in a second.
"You're bleeding... Pearl made it..." She looked around again and called out: "Femra?"

Rory Noland: District 7
Rory glances at Rachel and then looks at Pearl. "Pearl, we need someone to look at that leg." she calls over her shoulder to her one of her district partners. "Tank, can you get Pearl back on her feet, please? Unless you're hurt... Silver didn't get you too bad, did he?"
There was a mild throbbing, coming for her arm and leg but she ignores it for the time being. I need to get my people moving again. She lets out a breath. Apple had warned her about this. She had told her that she was foolish for caring the way she does about others and not herself. But it doesn't matter. Rory meant it when she said win or lose she'd play this game her way.
Jasmine's words pull her back to the present. And Rory begins to concentrate on the pain. It would keep her grounded instead of trapped in her thoughts.
"It hurts, but I'll be alright until we reach a water source..." Rory's throat tightens when Femra is mentioned. "I don't know. I didn't see her at the cornucopia. Are you alright?"
Rory looks around for Rowan, hoping that at least she got that right.

Jace Colton
There were a lot of them, and he'd stuck with Lallek. Watched his back. They were a bit behind everyone else, and as they came into the clearing, he was shucking his own jacket and stuffing it into one of the backpack he'd grabbed.
One of them only had iodine tablets in it, after all. He'd use the rest of the space for the jacket.
Out of the bloodbath. He could hear the screaming. People dying. He swallowed, taking a deep breath and looking around. No Micha. No Abigail. Take another deep breath.
No crying. Not yet. Lallek had stopped and was smearing dirt onto himself, and that was probably a good idea. this white silk shirt was going to stand out like it wasn't anyone's business.
I want to go home...
He swallowed again, following his partner's example. If he wanted to go home, he had to be smart. This white...it would stand out. Standing out was good for the cameras. Not for Careers chasing you down.
"We need to find water." That was the first thing. "It's warmer here, but it's not 'hot', per-se. But we' need water. We can go without food for awhile, but water is essential. Also: Someone who can keep up with us needs to take to the trees. We need an eye in the sky. If they're coming, we need to know before they know we know...
..That's a lot of 'knows'."
He swallowed. "Is this everyone? This was all who made it?"
So few. It was so very few, and there was still screaming. That they could still hear it meant that they were still too close to the melee..and they were too close and with people who were injured.
"We need to get moving. Pearl: Can you walk?"

"No Femra." Rowan said to Jasmine and Rory. "I saw her on the platform. I didn't see any one attack her. Maybe she ran first..."
"Uh..." Pearl lurched up from the rock and took a hesitant step. Her leg held and she took another. "I can walk. Running would hurt like hell; but I might be able to manage it."
Pearl remains standing and moves back to the rock, albiet gingerly, to pick up her pack and her sword. She holds her sword in her hand and walks over to stand beside Rory.
"Something has to be keeping these trees green." Rowan hazarded a guess. "Water should be around. I could climb or I could shish kabob whomever comes after us." She glances towards Rory. "You did the tree course, right?" A look towards Tank. "And you did?"
"I can't climb. Swimming - I'm your girl." Rachel stated, walking over to the group. She held her axe in her hand; her pack on her back. "I'm good with moving. I don't want them to catch up to us..."
Cannon! Cannon! Cannon! Cannon!
Four cannon blasts signal that four tributes have met their deaths during the Blood Bath. Perhaps more would follow... perhaps you?
Glancing around the Forrest upholds that the trees become more dense as you go in. Within a few minutes of walking, the sounds of birds and small wildlife scuttling about become more prevalent. The sounds of the battle begin to fade away. The trees stretch up towards the sky; green full leaves soaking up the sunlight that filters down to you. You pass two fallen logs that have split open; revealing some dry lumber.
Any one who hasn't removed their jacket begins to sweat; then the clothes you are wearing feel much more chilled.
After about twenty minutes of picking through the Forrest; you notice that to the north; the ground begins to slope downwards. The trees become more sparse; the rocks become more numerous. You notice that they are slick with moss and lichen. To the west and east; the Forrest continues on at a flat level.
Do you follow the sloping ground to the north; or the flat ground to the west or east?

Rory Noland: District 7 Rory unzips her jacket and stuffs ties it around her waist. Because it's damp she doesn't want to stuff it into her pack. The gash on her left arms stings as it hit his the cool air and she hisses in pain, as she looks down at her arm. Silver had caught her off guard. Never again, she vows. But she knows that she can't promise herself that it won't happen again. As far as she knows, Silver could very will be the one that kills her here. "Jace's is right. Water's most important." Rory says with a nod. "I'm glad you're okay Pearl. Hopefully, if we're smart about this you won't have to run anytime soon."Rory can feel her eyes begin to water when it's confirmed that the last time anyone saw Femra was on the platform. She begged me to protect her. I told I her I wouldn't let anything happen to her. I failed her. With a shaking breath, Rory wipes her face and presses on. Even though the sound of those four cannons hits her like a kick to the gut, she cannot stop. If Femra is alive, Rory prays that they'll find each other. If not, Rory might see her in the next life soon enough. Sooner if they didn't get moving. "Rowan and Tank you should stay on the ground. You're the only two that sliced up a career without having to throw something at them... And Tank, if I could get that rope from you, I can use it to move from tree to tree. But four eyes are better than two, so if anyone else can take to the trees with me, go for it." Rory moves into position and with a running start she takes to the one of the trees she thinks it the most suitable for climbing. Rory Noland rolled 7 dice to "Climb Tree" 6,5,10,8,6,4,8,8 (4 successes) Rory pulls herself up, straining a bit. She's tired, she knows it but she can't stop. If she stops she's dead. Once she's high enough, Rory takes a looks around to see if she can see any signs of someone following them and also if she can see anything that would indicate where water might be. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice for "Perception Check" 4,8,1, 4, 8,2 (2 successes)

As Rory climbed onto a limb of a wattle tree, she found herself high enough to have a good look around. Glancing back the way that they had come reveals that as far as she can tell -no tributes had followed the alliance into these woods. Glancing forward reveals that the ground to the north continues to slope downwards. In the distance - approximately a mile away - a blue lake resides in the valley. It appears to be of good size- Rory can even see a small island in the center of the lake.

Rory Noland: District 7
Rory lets out a breath that she didn't know she was holding. No one was following them. But they aren't out of the woods so to speak. She almost smiles at that thought. Her father loves puns.
As she whips around the thing she sees next does make her smile.
"Hey, there's a lake straight ahead, a lake with an island." Rory says pointing north.

Jace Colton
"Due North?" He tried to be quiet, but he knew he had to be heard. Maybe they could work out some sort of code. Whistle into the trees or something. It might save them rather than using their voices.
"Lallek and I will attempt to cover the path we took to keep from being followed. I'll keep an eye out or anything edible."
And anything poisonous.
He flinched a little at the cannon. Four times. Still, he didn't see the District 9 girls anywhere, and maybe they were two of the four. Maybe they were dead.
Maybe they'd made it to the beach. It's where they said they'd go. Maybe they were already on their way to the lake themselves....
...Maybe he needed to focus.

Pearl was okay. Thank the stars. Lallek knew she had been hurt, but he hadn't dared venture close enough to examine the wounds himself. Still a wave of relief passed through him ast Rory announced it. She would be alright. He hadn't failed.
Unlike Rory the mention of water didn't make Lallek smile. He remembered the last games and regardless of how he felt about swimming and the natural comfort he had in the water, it was a potentially lethal unknown. They would undoubtedly go to the lake, but Lallek certainly had no intention of being the first one in the water.
Lallek moves to the North edge of the alliance and leans against a tree. His eyes glance across the people here, careful to avoid Pearl and Rachel. They were holding together well, better than expected. Rory, Jace, Tank...Tank the giant softy. Simple and strong. Was there even the capacity for deception with the boy? Probably not. Still, Lallek found himself staring longer than intended as he tried to determine what roll tank would play here. A winner? No, but certainly an important force.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female Jasmine frowned. She didn't want to leave Femra behind, but at least, for the moment, the little girl was being left.... Her frown deepened at the sound of the cannon. I hope Femra made it out... and one of those wasn't Sorrel or Odin... she thought, then looked to the rest of the group, listening to Rory. "If'n worst things come to worst things, the sneakiest of us could head back for snow to melt," Jasmine said. She shed her jacket and touched her shoulder with a wince as it came away with a touch of red. It could be worse, she drew a shallow breath. She nods with the plan. "I'll take tuh the trees with you. Were like-a second 'ome back..." she didn't finish the statement. She looked from Rory to Tank. "Y'all cover th' ground an' we'll cover the air... fer now." As Rory dashed up the tree, Jasmine slung her bow over her shoulder and secured her backpack. She'd not even checked the contents yet, she might check it later. She took off at a second nearby tree and shimmied right up its trunk until she stood on a branch near Rory's level. 9,10,7,5,1,8,9,10,7,6,7 (5 successes) She balanced and looked around, turning her eyes in the same direction that Rory described. The trees were home, she took a deep breath, closed her eyes and drank the feel of the wind up there, then looked around again. 6,9,9,9,7 (3 successes) "Shall we make our way to the lake? I mean, it's pretty close, an' the others not outta Cornucopia might make their way there. We can ambush the careers and welcome wayward allies..." Jasmine said. She refused to believe the missing members of the alliance were among the cannon shots.

Seeing Rory strip off her jacket, Tank followed suit, also tying it around his waist. So far the Games were going very well for him, bar the (hopefully temporary) loss of a few Alliance members in the Cornucopia. As Rory informed them of a lake, Tank was reminded of the empty water skin he'd scavenged from the girls.
With a whistle up at Rory, Tank tossed one end up the rope to her, quite aware of the fact if he pulled hard on his end, he could likely kill or cripple the girl with the resulting impact on the ground. But she was his ally, and Conrad was quite right in his advice of sticking together for as long as possible.
"If any of the wounded can't walk easily, I could carry you." Tank offered. "I didn't get any bandages in my pack otherwise I'd fix you up."

Rory Noland: District 7
Rory she glances at Jasmine as they sit in different trees. The District 7 tribute smiles briefly. Somewhere deep down inside she hopes Jaz is right. Hopefully Femra didn't die. But the realist in Rory knows that it isn't true. She had failed so completely. Rory wouldn't--couldn't let the others know. Neither could she let on that she is tired... Mostly emotionally. She feels like she can sleep for a week. Maybe she'd get to take a dirt nap. Maybe... Maybe not...
Rory looks down at Jace and nods. She can see the lake it isn't far, like Jasmine said. "We have to keep moving." She says as quietly as she can.
When Tank tosses the rope up to Rory, she catches it. She almost smiles again. In the trees she feels at home. In the trees she'd prove herself valuable. "Thanks, Tank."

"I'll stay on the ground." Rowan affirmed to Rory's statement. "Do we have a plan if we're attacked?" She glanced from Rory to Jace, Tank and back up to Jasmine. "Are you guys going to be climbing further ahead from us?" Pearl lurched behind the group, limping but moving steadily forward. She had placed her sword on her belt. Rachel walked in front of her; her single bladed axe in hand. Rachel's prowess in battle was unknown; as the girl was untested. After all; she had been frozen on the platform when you had first seen her. Rachel had helped Pearl from the Cornucopa; yet was being reserved. Rachel glanced around the woods warily; looking very tense. Pearl spoke up; glancing upwards at Rory and Jasmine. "Seeing whats going on ahead of us could be good."As Jasmine moves up into the tree and glances around, she affirms the location of the lake - and the small island within. Yet she also was distracted by the treetops about fifty feet ahead of the group. As she watched the treetops, she noted a pair of large, black crows lifting out of the trees. The crows circled the tree tops, then dived downwards. As she scrutinized thier direction -s he spots two quick, running figures moving towards the Lake. Other tributes - small, lithe tributes! From thier forms, Jasmine would guess young females - were heading to the Lake. The black crows began to swoop after them, making sharp dives and pecking or harrassing them. Tank, Rory, Jace, Lallek, Rachel, Pearl and Rowan heard the ' CAW! CAW! bird calls. Sounds of surprised feminine shrieks also reach your ears. If you continue forward towards the sounds, the ground slopes downwards. The ground is now flecked by rocks, ranging from fist - sized to the size of Rory. The Lake will take several minutes to reach, but you will have to pass the running girls and the harrassing birds- OR take the longer way to avoid them... Please post the formation of the group to the OOC. Is your character last in line, are you walking in formation or in a large group? Is Rory and Jasmine with the group; or ahead of the group?

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine moved through the trees near Rory, though never choosing to spring to the same tree as the other girl. She didn't move a quickly as she would at home, the trees were a little further spread, and she paused to look around every few trees. Still, it felt good, and helped distract her from the knowledge that she was leaving friends behind on the bloodsoaked ground of the Cornucopia. At least they went quickly. There was infrequently time to waste killing someone slow in the opening moments of the Games.
She could grieve anyone who appeared in the sky later.
Jasmine came to a complete stop after a few minutes of moving forward. She and Rory'd moved ahead of the group, scouting as it were. That was fine by Jasmine, they were likely out of a good deal of danger up in the trees and in better position to scout out potential dangers to begin with.
She swiveled her head around, gaze crossing over a flicker of movement. She swept her gaze back to the treetops, the bottom of her stomach dropping out as two large crows lifted off and dove at two more flickers of movement on the ground. Other tributes.
"Rory, hold up," she called to her scouting partner. "Pair o'le crows. Bigg'uns, divin' on thos--"
The rest of her statement was cut short with the blood curdling calls of the crows and the shrieks of the tributes. Where there was two crows, there were likely more. Jasmine spent a moment pointing out where she'd seen the birds come from and dive to, before turning on her branch and calling to the group.
"Tributes ahead, with two biggun birds affer 'em. We can go 'round a long way an' 'void 'em... but," she said. She wasn't sure who's side the tributes were on, but some small part of Jasmine wanted to help them. "They might make it tuh the lake'n'island first."

Tank remained silent, studying the rocks before them and the birds in the distance, trying to block out the screams as an idea came to him.
"Who are the tributes?" Tank called back to the two tree-dwelling members of the Alliance.

Rory Noland: District 7 "Yeah, we're moving ahead." Rory replies to Rowan. "If we're attacked, scatter. We'll try to cover you guys up here. If things get too dicey, run to the lake and don't look back." Rory knows that that sentence could spell her doom. She has just ordered her people to leave even her behind if it looks like they were going to lose. Rowan and Tank might not listen but the others would. Rory means nothing to them and she knows that. Rory Noland rolled 7 dice to "Moving through the tree" 9,6,5,3,4,5,2 (1 successes) In the trees Rory fights to keep her balance. She's being too careful which is probably why she didn't see the two birds or the tributes. After, silently cursing herself, she nods in response to Jasmine. "Do you know if they're our people?" Rory asks Jasmine, looking herself. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Perception Check/Looking for the two Tributes" 9,1,7,4,7,4 (1 successes) She can’t make them out. She knows she has to get closer. Rory glances at Jasmine. And then hears Tank. “I can’t get a good view from here. We need to get closer.” She looks at Jasmine again. “Maybe one of them is Femra.” There’s a touch of optimism in her voice. But also fear. She doesn’t know if those tributes are friend or foe. Rory just knows that if it’s Femra they have to help. However, still having the others to consider, she looks ahead, trying to spot a route that would take them away from the crows. She doesn't know what the plan of attack will be. Maybe they'd want to go straight forward. Maybe they wouldn't. But Rory thinks she's spotted something, though she can barely make it out. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Perception Check/Scouting ahead & Looking for a safe route away from the crows" 6,1,9,7,1,6 (1 successes)

Mutations...Lallek was ill prepared to fight them. His knives could take down any tribute but the terrors here might not be droppd so easily. He was glad that he was at the rear of the column.
Lallek grabs Jace's shoulder, shakes his head and then points the long way. There was no point in risking their lives for People they would just have to kill later anyway. Surely his partner could see that. Couldn't they all? Ferma wasn't worth the risk. The gesture was sweet but not wise.

Their plan was to get to water.
It didn't matter how they got there. And there were other places to get water that weren't the lake. There were also ways to get water that weren't through mutations. They got their party North and to water. That was the arrangement.
None of that included fighting mutations.
Lallek was right. They needed to go around. Going forward and 'saving' people they'd have to maybe kill later was a bad idea.
"Everyone knows where to meet." They were at the rear, and there was a good chance that not everyone could hear him. "We go north. We meet at water. We trust everyone to get there, or to not."
And he wasn't dying for anyone. Not here. Not like that.
He'd made a promise, and he nodded to Lallek. "We go the long way and cover our tracks."

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 FemaleShe was scouting, they spotted things a head. She didn't want to get knocked out of the trees by some ugly, black, muttation of a bird. But Rory could be right, one of those slim feminine forms being dive-bombed by the birds might be Femra. Or Sorrel. She didn't honestly think it'd be the latter, at least not without a bulkier Odin with her. Jasmine gritted her teeth, unslung her bow, took her pack off long enough to untie her jacket from her waist and wear it proper again. She hoped it might provide some sort of protection, though if the muttation's beaks were anything like the knives from the bloodbath, it wouldn't. But it gave her peace of mind. As she was redonning her backpack, she looked over at Rory. "Don't you abandon me tuh them... You havva axe ready. Them birds come fer me an' you knock 'em from th'sky." She took a deep breath and looked forward at the tree where the birds had come from and the fleeing tributes. "If they're not ours," Femra, she amended in her head, "I'm comin' right back." She took up her bow, drew an arrow from her quiver and nocked it; no reason not to be prepared, and moved easily through the branches toward the commotion. 10,8,7,9,4,6,1,8,9,10,9,8,9 (9 successes) Jasmine was at home in the trees, moving smoothly closer, pausing only long enough to stare at the tributes, and look, anxiously, for the angry muttations. 9,7,9,3,9 (3 successes) As Jasmine neared, she stopped on a branch and got a good look at the fleeing tributes, as well as looking for more of the muttations, her heart thumping heavily in her chest more from touches of fear from the birds than the exertion of moving through the trees.

Rory's evaluation of the woods for several moments, studying the ground below. She spotted what looked to be a ground trail circling towards the west; out of sight. The trees that way were still prevalent; she expected that once the group wanted to move north again; they needed only to take another sighting of the Lake.
As Jasmine moved through the trees, her skill helped her move when the wind blew through the branches. This masked the sounds that her movement caused and allowed her to move the ten feet forward to evaluate the tributes on the ground. She saw the taller, petite tribute first - dusky skin; dark hair. One of her arms is already bleeding, held over her head for protection. The girl ducks behind a larger tree, looking Jasmine's way - to check on the other girl. Jasmine clearly sees Micha's terrified expression. She looks towards the trees that Jasmine stands in; so Jasmine looks down.
About twenty feet north and by the trunks of one of the trees; a smaller female is briefly blocked by the body of a black crow. As Jasmine watches, the crow's talons clutch at the girl's shoulders; causing the girl to cry out in pain. Some of the tributes may recognize the girl's voice - Abigail; the younger tribute. The crow beats its wings, briefly rising up. Abigail stumbles from the tree; towards Micha. She stumbles over a root and sprawls on her belly on the ground. A crow swoops in, skimming the ground beside Abigail. The crow rises; clutching something in its feet. As it rises in the air; Jasmine recognizes a hunting knife as the sun reflects off of the blade.
The bird had stolen Abigail's knife.
The second bird folded its wings; moving towards the fallen girl.
