Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
Rory was dreaming of Gable.
They sat watching the sun set (cliche, but her favorite time of day nonetheless). She had her head resting on his shoulder and they were laughing at nothing in particular. His body was warm and he smelt pine. And he felt... safe. There in his arms she felt safe.
Then the dream shattered into a million little pieces. And Rory vaulted up from besides Jasmine. Her gaze was wild, unfocused. When she finally understood that the arena was reality, her gaze locked onto to Lallek.
"Lallek?" Rory sprang to her feet and rushed over to Lallek. Was it implusive? Yes. Dangerous? Probably. But Lallek needed to come to. He need to see that the bad things weren't real.
Rory slid on her knees when she got near Lallek's sleeping body. She lifted his head into her lap, stroking his hair. And when she spoke her voice was as sweet as honey. "Lallek... it's okay... Come back to us... It's okay."
She repeated herself over and over again, stroking his hair. If Lallek woke up, he'd see Rory looking down at him with genuine concern in her eyes. "It's okay, Lallek. It's okay."

"Whats happening?" Micha moved to Rory's shoulder; standing beside the other girl. She stared down at Lallek and Rory; concerned. At seeing that he was clutched in the throes of a nightmare; she lifted her head. Her gaze swept over the nearby trees worriedly. The tribute stepped closer towards a heavier oak; drawing a throwing knife. Micha peered at the shadows worriedly.
"Something could hear him." Micha whispers. "Should we get up and get moving?"
"Whatsa?" Rowan shifted sleepily beside Jasmine. She remains prone on the ground; sleepily rubbing at her eyes.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female Jasmine felt as though she had just drifted off when she was jolted from a, thankfully, dreamless sleep. She didn't feel rested, and it took long moments to register that the screams weren't just in her head. She looked down at Rowan's word, then to Pearl, who still slept peacefully beside her. She furrowed her brow. Why wasn't this... Someone was screaming. She bolted up, bleary-eyed and startled now, nudging Rowan with her foot, then Pearl. "Somebody's'creamin' up a storm," she said as she scrubbed a hand across her eyes. She unslung her bow, not quite feeling up for a fight, but being willing to protect the pair of tributes at her feet if need be, as well as Tank or... She looked around again, spotted Rory and Lallek, the source of the screaming. That wasn't good. Not good at all, she thought. Fortunately, the noise the boy made paled in comparison to Jasmine's shout to Rory. "Is 'e alright?" She eased an arrow out of her quiver and nocked it. She might be tired, but with adrenaline flooding her system, she intended to be ready to shoot unfriendlies as they arrived. 6,9,9,1 (2 successes) I dropped 1 die for darkness/fatigue, if more need to go, take away successes.

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
"I don't know." Rory breathed, her brimming with tears. Her throat was tight. What were they going to do? What did they need to do? She needed to think. What was the first thing? First thing's first...
She tried twice before Rory found her voice. "Set up a perimeter. Surround us. And wake up the others. If something is coming just be ready. Lallek's having a nightmare."
She didn't want to wake him violently but... "Lallek... you have to wake up right now. I'm the one supposed to be having a moment. You're the one supposed to be rolling your eyes because I'm too emotional. So Lallek, wake up."

As the last of the gear was repacked, a loud scream startled Tank. It took but a few seconds to discern it was Lallek, and that Rory was already by his side. Tank decided to leave her to it and keep an eye out in case Lallek's yelling attracted undue attention.

Jace Colton
Fall out....
...And get woken by a scream.
It's one of those instinctive things that people do when they have a lot of family, and Lallek was close enough. Reach out and gently lay a hand on Lallek's face. Sometimes, all a person needed was to know that they weren't alone.
Instinctive, to start whispering. His sister sometimes had nightmares, and the only way to get her back to sleep....
...A whispering song. Something soft and pretty and calming. Really, he's half-asleep himself, and hurting, and only sort of aware of where he actually is. His mind registers the Arena somewhat, but that's faraway.
Tomorrow Will Be Kinder. A pretty song. About things getting better. Tomorrow Will Be Kinder.
It was one of his favorites. Micha had heard him sing it to himself more than once. To Abby a time or two in the apartments. Enough so that they could all get to sleep rather than stay away terrified of the near-certain death that awaited them.
Tomorrow Will Be Kinder
Hopefully, it worked, and even as his eyes are bleary-blue and exhausted, he looks up at Rory and the others. "Don't panic. Could make it worse..."
[Expression 2: Singing]

As several tributes try and silence the thrashing - and screaming - tribute, Micha and Tank continue to look out for danger. Its a wise decision. Already the natural night sounds of the Forrest - the insects; the hunting animals - have already started to hush around them. At first; every thing seems quiet for a few moments.
Then two beady black eyes peer out from behind a tree in the direction of the lake. Another set peers out from the east. Its too dark to make out much but the sheen of the eyes; watching. Were these just animals; or worse?

As Jasmine and Tank search the night for signs of danger; he noted the shiny; reflective eyes of a creature peering out from behind a tree ten feet from the camp. The eyes were four feet from the ground; suggesting the creature was about four feet tall. Below the eyes was a sharp; pointed yellow beak about three inches long. Tank could barely make out the color white around the eyes and beak - white fur, feathers, skin - perhaps?

Jace Colton
Things had gotten quiet. The animals have gotten too quiet. It meant something. Predator. That's what it meant. But were they reacting to the alliance, or something else?
He propped himself up on an arm, fingers finding his scythe. Prey. He would not be Prey. Not here and now.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine stared into the darkness, becoming acutely aware of the unnatural quiet settling around them. Something was out there. Something mean was out there and the night-life knew it. They were as attentive as the Capitol hoped all of the families at home were. It made Jasmine... not nervous, but uneasy. The nervousness was cut out of her for the moment by fatigue and adrenaline. She was entirely fight or flight for the moment. And with the vague glimpses of nasty looking beaks, beady eyes, and fur... or was it feathers?... her impulse was distinctly leaning toward flee.
She didn't have the energy for this fight. "Rowan, get P'rl up... Time tuh go."
She never took her eyes off of the four foot tall beasts at the forest's edge as she made her way to Rory and the screaming boy. He was a beacon, she was certain. Leave him... they should, he was trouble and would be further trouble.
"Rory, get him up... We gotta go. Gotta go, now," she said to her friend, then shouted, it couldn't hurt with Lallek screaming, to Tank. "Tank, help over here please!"

Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeRory Noland rolled 4 dice to "Perception Check" 1,3,3,2 (0 successes) Rory couldn't see a damn thing, so she focused back onto Lallek. He was more important than what was out there. Rory smiled when Jace began to sing. He had a beautiful voice. On his victory tour, Jace will need to showcase that talent. It was Rory's opinion that all of Panem would love the sound of his voice. "Panicking would be bad." It struck Rory as odd. Hours earlier they were all conspiring against each other. Now that there was a crisis, they were a team again. Not for much longer. But long enough to get away. And now she had to carry Lallek. Rory wasn't strong. But she wasn't a fighter either. So carrying Lallek would free Tank to fight. "Okay, Lallek. Time to go. No, don't get up. I'll get you." The sarcasm was her cousin's strong suit, not hers. But it made Rory feel better. Rory Noland rolled 5 dice to "Lifting Lallek" 9,1,2,1,5 (1 successes) "Lallek what did you eat? A pile of stones." Rory Noland rolled 5 dice to "Lifting Lallek" 4,2,5,9,7 (1 successes) Rory Noland rolled 5 dice to "Lifting Lallek" 5,9,5,8,1 (2 successes) Rory tries twice more before she's able to pick Lallek off of the ground with a muted groan, slinging him over her shoulders, in a fighterman's carry. Because she knew she couldn't hold him in her arms. "Let's go."

Klo was woken by the sudden whispers. "Hey what's going on?" Klo asked a little bit too loudly. She listened for a second and heard Rory say "Lets go.". Suddenly Klo couldn't breathe. They were leaving her! "Hey where are you going! You cant leave me here!" Klo felt herself tremble. She had no idea if they were leaving out of their own free will or if there was an impending attack. "Help!" Klo said hoarsely.

At Rory's call Tank returned to the collected group, to see what his help was needed for. As he got into view of the others, he noticed Rory scooping up Lallek. With the tribute crying out for someone, Tank moved over to Klo, crudely using his axe's edge to sever her binds. "Picking you up." Tank stated. Tank rolled 7 dice to "Lift" 9,1,6,2,7,3,1 (1 successes) Grunting irritably, Tank tried again. Tank rolled 7 dice to "Lift" 2,2,5,1,5,9,9 (2 successes) Whether Klo would consent to being carried was another matter entirely.

"Pearl! Get up!" Rowan barks; roughly shaking the tribute. She doesn't wait for Pearl to rise, roughly lifting the sleepy girl into a seated position. She takes Jasmine's winter jacket and hastily puts Pearl's arms through it. Rowan crouches and grabs Pearl's pack and her pouch of knives; placing both in Pearl's hands.
"Up! We have to run!" Rowan hisses. Rowan slings her own pack on and hefts her axe up. She hurries to Rory's side. "Whats wrong with Lallek?" Pearl asks sleepily as she stands. She moves over to Rory; evaluating Lallek on the girl's back. Pearl bent and scooped up Lallek's pack and items that were around his sleeping area; hurriedly securing them on her back.
The bird
The bird that Tank and Jasmine had first noticed darts into the camp site. Now all but Klo can see the animal - and what an animal it is. The bird stands at four feet; with beady black eyes. Below the eyes was a sharp; pointed yellow beak about three inches long. As it moved; the tributes noticed a troubling feature - its feet were tipped with three long, curved talons. Tearing talons. Before you could process its arrival; it darts forward quickly.
The bird makes a straight line for the dead crow by the cold embers of the fire; efficiently slicing at with one foot. Entrails spilled out and the white bird's head darted forward; helping itself to a mouthful. That head swiveled around as it surveyed the tributes - and its head bobbed to Lallek then Jace. The bird lowered its' head; likely preparing for a charge.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 FemaleJasmine hadn't meant actually carry Lallek... Hell, leaving him behind would have been her choice. Dividing an alliance now would have made perfect sense, but what was done was done, and she wasn't going to chastise her friend over the decision. She dashed forward to the divided piles of gear Tank had prepared, stowing her bow as she ran. She had little intention to leave it behind after they'd fought so hard for it. She grabbed up what she could, dangling backpacks and straps off her shoulders, and looked up as the bird thing came charging into camp. That was bigger than the crows... but didn't look like it could fly. Which was fortunate. She didn't think she could climb very well with all the gear, however, and took to fleeing instead. "Keep tuhgether!" She shouted as she ran back toward the alliance, then lead the way away from the big bird thing. Stam+Ath = 5,5,8,6,10,3,10,7,5 (3 successes) Stam+Ath -1 4,5,2,7,8,5 (1 successes) Apply the one most appropriate given Jasmine's fatigue and encumbrance.

Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeRory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Running like hell -1" 7,2,6,5,10,10,1,9 (3 successes) The tiny girl moved quickly, holding her hand out to pick up her pack as she ran. Rory wasn't thinking anymore. It was instinct. Well, there was some thinking involved. Rory couldn't turn off her brain completely. They'd heal Jace, split the loot and be on their way. Hopefully, Rory carrying a sleeping Lallek to safety bought her alliance an amicable parting of ways, one without malice or rancor. She really wanted to tell Jace that there was no hard feelings because there really wasn't. Jace and Lallek had their way of playing the games. Rory had hers. They were different. But neither way was wrong nor right. They just were. Besides, here in the arena all that mattered was the effectiveness of your alliance. Not the manner in which they played. "Don't fall behind." Rory said to no one in particular.

Klo felt her bonds being slashed and she was heaved up in the air. She could tell by the grunt that it was Tank. "Thanks." she whispered breathlessly, hoping he would take that as a motion to run. "Could you explain what's going on while we run for our lives.?" Klo couldn't help giving a wry smile, encouraging him that everything would be okay. Klo hugged her knees, curling into a ball hoping she would be easier to carry. And thankfully she had her backpack on when she was tied up. She tugged at the straps on the sack and they slid farther up her arm.

Tank's eyes widened at the sight of the beast that had invaded their campsite, then his face paled as it effortlessly ripped the crow open with its huge talons. "Big freakin' bird!" Tank babbled for Klo's benefit, promptly turning and racing after the others. Tank rolled 7 dice to "Running!" 9,5,4,5,10,6,9,9 (4 successes) Tank was suddenly grateful for his life in District 7, as the usual crates and timber he'd been used to carrying meant Klo barely slowed him down as as he gave it his all in putting distance between him and the deadly muttation behind them.

Jace Colton rolled 8 dice to "Stamina + Athletics + Fleet of Foot" 7,10,7,9,7,1,7,8,3 (3 successes) One thing that Panem knew just from watching Jace in the Cornucopia? He was fast. He'd always been. He'd always knew just where to put his feet. Just how long his stride needed to be, and in hindsight he could outrun just about anyone he knew. Assuming, of course, he had a flat surface. He didn't even need a head-start. The bird looked as if it were going to charge him, and without a thought he grabbed up his bag and took off. Did his best to stay near Lallek--who was still unconscious--but he ran. Promise me you'll run and you won't look back.He didn't. Kept the group in his peripheral, but didn't look back at the huge bird. Because he'd seen them before. Just the one, and he'd thought it was a fisher-bird. Contemplated killing it for food, even. Jace hadn't taken it for a scavenger, but you know what they say about hindsight. And still, the hand-scythe is in one hand as he runs... ...He wasn't going down without a fight.

The tributes quickly become of one mind; forming a smooth race from the camp ground. The white bird darts in behind the group; emitting a sharp squawk. A second bird darts in from the eastern side; attempting to cut in and attack the group's flank. The birds are working in a coordinated effort; moving at a break neck speed. You find yourself hefting up your gear or passenger and picking up the pace. Jace has an extra moment to spare to glance behind him; seeing that the first bird is gaining on Rory. Its' head is making sharp jabs towards Rory's passenger; Lallek; who remains out of reach. Something about you and Lallek- ah. Those cuts - untended on Jace.
The night sky has lightened to a periwinkle. The sun has not risen yet; and long shadows occasionally dog the group. Is that path safe? Or does another bird hide in the shadowy recesses? The birds certainly seem to be making a ruckus with their squawks. The birds stay right on the group's tail; challenging them to maintain their speed.
[OOC: I need another roll for Sta + athletics from all runners; please. Also post to the ooc for consensus; please]

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 FemaleJasmine pumped her legs, trying to shift the bags around so she could run easier. As a result, she wasn't moving quite as quick as she liked. She didn't spare a glance to any direction beyond the one she was running in. She'd not pumped her legs like this since the Bloodbath, only... this felt worse, tired and running on pure adrenaline with too little fuel in her system. All resulting in her slowing down a little by little. She hoped it'd not be so much that the bird'd catch her. 1,2,8,3,7,3,1 (1 successes)

Tank rolled 7 dice to "Footchase" 1,9,1,1,1,5,6 (1 successes) Despite the excellent ground Tank had covered prior to the second bird showing up, a loose stone underfoot made him stumble, though he thankfully managed to keep running. Unfortunately the momentary drop in speed was enough for one of the birds to catch up and lash out at him. Tank hissed painfully at the vicious assault, and his heart skipped a beat as the impact made Klo slip in his hands... Tank rolled 6 dice to "Grip on Klo" 4,10,4,7,10,4,5,3 (2 successes)

2012-06-29 01:14:51 Jace Colton rolled 8 dice to "Stamina + Athletics + Fleet of Foot" 10,4,5,5,5,2,1,6,9 (2 successes) They were after Jace and Lallek. Which meant they could likely smell the blood. or they could tell that they are wounded. Lallek needed to wake up. Rory wouldn't be able to run like this with him for long. He wasn't a small guy, and Rory wasn't a big girl... ...But he was still going. Still running strong even if he slowed down a touch. The woods were thicker here. More roots to dodge, which meant they were going slower. They either needed to find a place to hide, or they needed to get someplace the birds wouldn't go. And soon.

Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeRory Noland rolled 5 dice to "Still Running like hell -1" 1,6,4,6,7 (0 successes) Rory felt herself falling. This was it, she thought. And then it was all instinct. She let Lallek slide off of her back as she tripped forward, rolling with the fall. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Rolling to standing position" 6,7,5,8,8,5 (2 successes) Rory is on her feet axe off of her belt and ready for anything. [Quick Draw: Axe] She jumped in front of Lallek's body. If you get us killed Lallek, I'm going to murder you.She smiled. "This is it."If she makes it out of here. That'll be twice she saved them. She didn't have to save Lallek. She could have kept running. And let Jace take care of this one. To say the thought hadn't crossed her mine would have been a lie. "Keep going!" she told the others.
