Firemaking Station ~ Rory & Femra
"Hello," The slim brunnette woman greeted Rory and Femra as they approached the Firemaking station. "- welcome to fire making station. Please survey this site that represents a wooded area. Which block would you be able to harvest wood for a suitable fire?"
The trainer gestures to a square area about twenty feet by twenty feet. Three square signs with '1', '2' and '3' are positioned in front of three different situations. The first sign is in front of a fallen tree. The trunk has split open, revealing dry, flaky bark and deep brown wood beneath. The '2' stands in front of a young sapling; the tree hardly more than three feet tall. Green shoots and new leaves stretch upwards from its thin, small branches.
The '3' is positioned next to a tall oak tree with strong branches and smooth bark. The leaves appear well nourished and green.

Thrall, District 12Thrall sighted down the shaft of the arrow and loosed them rapidly. The first arrow struck home, the second narrowly missing the target. With an irritable hiss, he leapt forwards, grabbing the fallen shaft and loosing it again, dead centre. The rapidity with which he could put an arrow to the string was astounding- he needed no time to renock between shots. The next hits were swift, clean strikes, the final slamming into the target dead centre. Thrall hefted the bow again, glancing at the trainer. "Good enough?" 2012-05-01 12:49:22 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 10,10,4,8,8,10,6,2,7,5,2 (5 successes) 2012-05-01 12:48:02 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 2,2,1,5,1,3,10,7,1 (1 successes) 2012-05-01 12:47:34 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 6,8,7,8,6,7,9,8 (4 successes) 2012-05-01 12:47:18 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 4,1,4,10,10,5,2,4,7,3 (2 successes) 2012-05-01 12:47:04 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 1,4,10,6,2,4,9,8,4 (3 successes) 2012-05-01 12:46:50 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 6,3,7,1,3,3,6,3 (0 successes) 2012-05-01 12:46:36 Thrall rolled 8 dice to "Shoot the targeeeet -3" 7,4,5,9,7,6,4,9 (2 successes)

Jace Colton
He nods, doing a few stretches to get himself loosened up after spending so much time at the edible plants station. He was sort of glad that, should he survive this, he likely would never have to work in the fields ever again, as he'd be wealthy enough to just...not.
Because after the Arena, he had the feeling he'd never look at a hand-scythe the same way ever again.
Getting himself loose isn't all that difficult, having spent his whole life doing hard-labor. Jace was well aware that he was being watched...by probably a lot of people right now, and as such he smiled. Finished his stretches.
Grabbed the hand-scythe off of the rack and went to the instructor.
"Aright...show me how ta get better with this thing."

I started to dig. I cupped the dirt in my hands and dropped it on the table making a mountain the farther I dug. Soon my hands grasped the roots of a plant. I unearthed the rest of the plant and looked at it puzzled.. I held it up to the trainer waiting for her to explain.

Rory Noland: District 7 Female Tribute @ Fire Making station
Rory brow furrowed in deep thought as she contemplated which of tree provided the best chance for suitable firewood. The sapling was obvious out. Too young, too green. The oak seemed to pose the same problem. Firewood needed to be dry and preferably half-dead. Which meant that Rory had her answer.
Rory went to the first square and touched the wood with her hands. The bark crumbled, giving way at her touch. She nodded to herself before she locked back at the slim brunette. "My best guess would be the first tree. The wood is dark, meaning it doesn't contain much water. When you cut fresh wood it's light... almost white in color. This looks dead."

At the trainer's challenge Lallek smiles. As the targets begin to move Lallek's eyes settle on one and track it. There was no pattern at first but he could feel the target. It's pattern it's movement was random. When it was about to settle into a rhythm it would shift, and that was what he felt. The first knife flew free, barely striking.
Lallek rolled 11 dice to "Dex+Athletics" 6,1,2,5,6,2,1,4,2,6,10,8 (2 successes)
The next target was easier to track. There was a peace in this action. It was a skill Lallek could excel at and perform as a natural movement. This was why the fishermen would gamble with him. To teach him a skill. The second knife hit more solidly.
Lallek rolled 11 dice to "Dex+Athletics" 1,8,7,1,2,2,4,9,2,5,9 (3 successes)
The Capitol was going to take that skill from him though. They were going to claim his life and those memories were going to turn to ash. His memories of childhood had been to teach him to take life. That was the real tragedy here. His childhood was stolen. Silently Lallek hurled the knife and when it impacted the target he was red in the face from the effort.
Lallek rolled 11 dice to "Dex+Athletics" 10,9,10,3,10,9,8,5,8,2,7,6,2,1 (7 successes)

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine studied knots arrayed on the game trail by the trainer, then replicated them. It seemed easy enough, even though her knots and arrangement weren't as neat and tidy as the trainer's. She was slowly feeling less clumsy with the rope and more competent and hoped that the feeling stayed with her through to the Arena, as well as the knowledge.
"Can I see it in action? Then move onto something that would be suitable for a person? Can these be made..." Her speech slowed. Was I really about to so casually ask about lethality of a trap? And I'm not even in the Arena yet... She finished the question: "Can these be made lethal or are they purely for trapping?"

Thrall: Archery Station The trainer watched Thrall's archery session; giving a short nod at every bulls eye. At Thrall's question; the trainer evaluated the final cluster for a moment.
"I feel that you have a solid grasp on archery. Your cluster is consistant; the moving targets didn't pose much of a challenge for you. You have a choice. You could stay and practice a faster set; or you could proceed onto your next training station." The trainer evaluated Thrall.
Jace: Scythe station
The trainer gestured for Jace to approach the dummies. "We'll set you on a three - part excercise. For the first dummy, focus on the sharp portion of the scythe." The trainer demonstrated on the scythe that Jace held.
"You notice that there is no long blade or sharp shaft that a sword or spear has. You have a small piercing area to make a puncture- best on a sensitive spot such as the eyes or the throat of an opponent..."
The trainer took a step to the side, gesturing to the second dummy.
"For this part of the excercise, focus on that flat curve of the blade. A sharp crack on the back of the head-" He gestured to his own head. "- a hard blow to the cheek. It can bruise- or shatter bones if your arm is stong enough."
The trainer gestured to the third dummy.
"What part of the scythe would you use for this one?"
Klo: Edible & Medicinal Plants
"This is an aquatic plant. You see the roots here, the brown, reedy look to it. This is called katniss. It can be found in lakes or by strong streams."
The trainer leaned down beside Klo, gesturing to another drab colored plant beside the katniss.
"This is a different sort of root. Not tasty, but abundant. Now looking at this muddy, wet ground, where would you guess you could find this root?"
Rory ~ Fire making station
"Precisely." The trainer agreed, coming to kneel beside Rory. She gestured for Femra to join them. "Now to start the fire; you need to get some dried grass, leaves or even frayed bits of your clothing. If you can't find them; you can take your sharp blade; axe, cutting knife-" She removed a small hatchet from her belt. "- then cut small bits of dry wood. "
She handed the hatchet to Rory.
"Go ahead and begin. You need a handful of small splinters; then a handful of wood the size of two of your fingers. Then some the size of your wrist. Do you have any questions?"
Lallek: Knife throwing station
"Well done." The trainer commented. "Now; you've used the proper weight for the distance. A solid grouping. To earn a kill in a arena; however, one blade won't always kill an opponent. It may be two or three knives before your opponent falls. I'll set up a faster grouping with nine targets. It will be more difficul; but good practice."
The trainer pushed a button and nine targets at different lengths - 10, 20 and 30 yards began to hurtle by on thier rails.
[same roll, - 3]
Jasmine: Knot tying station
"I'm afraid this knot is non - lethal. You can come upon your prey after it. You can also attempt to place barbs, knives or other sharp weapons to cut into your opponent. It may be awhile before you check the trap; but loosing blood could weaken your opponent and attract other beasts.
The trainer completes the knots and leans towards Jasmine; showing her the completed snare.
"You want to see it in action? "
The trainer turned and gestured to a slight, slim female trainer. The trainer showed no displeasure as the first trainer set the snare upon the path. The female trainer walked squarely down the path before you. As her ankle steps into the snare; she soundlessly was upended and lifted upside down. She swung slowly from the branch; looking expectantly at the first trainer. "You see?" He stated; drawing his knife and stepping forward. "Grasp her shoulders, if you would. I shall cut her down."

I examined the plant and made my way to the ground. I thought of it for a second. Then a guess spread upon my lips. "A marshy area? Maybe near a pond?" I hesitated. I shrugged my shoulders.

Rory Noland: District 7 Female Tribute @ Fire Making station
Rory smiled when she was handed the hatchet. Finally, something that she was familiar with. The axe felt right in her hands. Like she had been missing something and was made whole again. Quickly, Rory cut into the tree, fraying it to splinter the wood. She made it look easy (Weaponary 4/ Specialty Woodworking & Axe Wielding), cut out each piece to exact specifications. She knew she wouldn't be about to get this clean of cuts during the games. But she could get pretty darn close.
"I do have a question..." Rory said as she gathered up her wood. "What's the best way to set up your firewood? I mean how can I stack the wood blocks to make a better fire, or rather make a fire that will last?"
As she spoke Rory fiddled with the blocks of wood, making a pyramid of sorts. She put the wood splinters in the center, thinking that perhaps she was on the right track.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine gave a thoughtful 'hmmm' to seeing the trap in action. She hoped she'd be able to render someone just as helpless in the Arena. When asked to help lower the trapped trainer, she moved forward and slid her arms under the woman's arm pits and held her up as the male trainer sliced away the ropes. It wasn't lethal by itself, and that made Jasmine feel a little better and a little worse all at the same time, but could be rendered lethal. Perhaps with pungy sticks, or a well placed rock that a person could fall on when they released themselves from the trap? She nibbled her lip and smiled at the trainers. If she could duplicate this in the Arena it'd be a very worthwhile skillset.
"It makes mer sense now that I've seen it in action. I was a li'l confused before, but... it's mostly clear now an' down to technique wit' the knots. Thank you... Are there other knots you can teach me?"

Medicinal & Edible Plant Station: Klo"Yes, an area where the ground is wet - or muddy looking - is the best place to find this plant." The trainer affirmed. placing three types of berries out on a white cloth on a table. "These three berries grow in the woods. This one," She plucks up the red berry. "- is called Bittersweet or woodly nightshade. You can see that it has a slight egg shape." She holds the flower out so that you can get a better look at it. "This is a toxic plant that will make you very sick, so make certain never to eat it. Do you want to guess what these berries are?" she indicates the two other berries on the counter. Wits & Survival roll to guess, please Rory & Femra: Firemaking station"Its best to do it in this way." The trainer took some of the kindling Rory had made, making a small mound. "Now you place your fiber or dried grass on this mound to light it. Then when it catches, you are ready with these small sticks you made. You want to lay them in a way that the fire gets plenty of oxygen."The trainer lays three pieces of wood over the pile Rory had made at a criss crossing angle. "You don't want to throw in two much at first. Wait for the wood to catch."She turned to Femra; gesturing for her to join her and Rory. Knot tying Station ~ Jasmine"Yes, it can be a very versatile trap." The trainer replied as the freed trainer walked away. "You've learned how to snare food - and a foot. Is there any thing else that you want to be able to do with knots? I could teach you how to construct a fishing net if you have an interest in fishing. Or perhaps how to make a snare net. "

Rory nods her brow furrowing as she commits what she's learning to memory. Kindling, Fiber or Grass, Light Fire, Place Wood. She thinks she has it. And takes the three sticks and sets them aside again. "I think I've got it. Are we going to learn how to use the flint next?"

Jace Colton: Hand Scythe Station
"The pointy end?" One finger touches the point of the scythe, and he grins at the instructor. "S'only end I can think of. Unless you're thinkin' the handle. Which if it's wood or metal could hurt somebody hardcore."
The dummies are looked at, and he nods. "So the blade, then the curve, then the point?"

Edible & medicinal plants station ~ Klo
"Not even a guess?" The trainer looked surprised. "This one -" She indicated the blackberry. "- is a blackberry; a good berry to eat. This one," She indicated the blooming plant. "- is sorrel. Its leaves are edible and can be boiled in a tea or eaten raw."
The trainer looked at Klo for a moment; awaiting a reaction.
Fire making station ~ Rory & Femra "The flint reduces the time it will take you to get a flame. You set up your bed of kindling and fiber; something that will catch easily. Then you place the flint against the mound of kindling and strike with the steel. There will be sparks; you strike hard onto the mound catches. Then you place your thicker wood upon it.
One thing to remember - wet or greener wood will be harder to burn. It also will produce more smoke; which will make your fire more visible."
Hand scythe station: Jace
"Thats it. You've got it. Now go ahead and stike these three dummies with those parts of your scythe. Remember to go for the areas that I mentioned."
The trainer stepped back to a safe distance; gesturing for Jace to approach the dummies and begin his hands on practice.
If any one glances around; one can see that Emerald is making mincemeat of her dummy at the sword training station.

Jace Colton
The blade first. The sharp portion. To the sensitive parts. The neck. The eyes. The belly. It didn't have much of a blade, and he had to get in closer than he thought in order to get a good hit, but in the end he could see how devastating it could be.
It likely wasn't a weapon they were worried about too much in the Arena, but he was showing them that they should be worried.
And then there was the flat part of the blade, and his first hit to the side of the head did nothing. The others though...he might not have been a large person, but he was learning to throw his weight into the blade. Into the blows. To damage the dummies.
At least he wasn't so overly loud.
And then the point of the blade. He started with an almost chopping action. Experimented. Stopped and started to see how much damage he was doing to the torso. To the neck. To the head and chest. One last hit to the forehead of the dummy, putting himself behind it. Just to see what he was capable of.
And then a look to the instructor.
"How was that?"

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine watched the trainer, smiled at him again. A net would be wonderful, especially if she could rig it as another trap. "Snare net, please."
While she wasn't about to admit it to the trainers, and where it could be overheard by other tributes, she wasn't terribly excited about a fishing net as she wasn't terribly excited about swimming... or her lack of ability in that area. Sure, she could dog paddle, but... let's just stay out of the water if we can.

Rory Noland: District 7 Female Tribute @ Fire Making station
"I see." Rory says, her mind working out how more smoke and more visible could be used to her advantage. She files the half-finished thought away. Rory knows she'll need it soon. Well, maybe. The games were predictable in the sense they were always unpredictable. Nevertheless, she filed the information away.
"And then once you get the fibers and kindling to catch you place the wood over like this." Rory says more to herself than to the trainer as she places the wood over the mound again the way she was showed, in a crisscross pattern.
"Not too much. Have let the air through.... So..." Rory looks up at her trainer. "Once I've got a spark is there anything I can do to help the fire along?"

This was actually getting tough. Lallek had to pace himself a bit more. The pattern was there. The rhythm, and then there it was.
Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 6,6,10,6,7,10,4,3,5,4 (2 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 6,10,10,3,4,8,10,8,4,5,7 (5 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 3,3,10,3,5,9,10,4,2,5 (3 successes)
The knives flew free and away on a calm exhale from Lallek. Nice to know he wasn't totally out of his element. If he could keep this up in the arena, he just might be able to keep Pearl alive.

Jace: Hand scythe station The trainer gestured to the three dummies, walking around the dummies. A moment was taken to inspect Jace's efforts against them.
"Very good." The trainer nodded approvingly. "You have certainly made an impact." The trainer steps in closer to one, gesturing to where Jace had experimented with the pointed end of his weapon.
"Look at how you did much more damage to the neck and head than to the chest and torso. Delicate areas are best. I have one more excercise that you may enjoy."
The trainer moved to the control panel and another dummy rose up on the practice mat. This one was mounted on an electric cable and had joints that were connected with mechanical means.
"This one can move," The trainer explained, typing in a few buttons on his control panel. The dummy immediately began to bob and weave as a person might.
"- care to practice on a moving target?"
[same roll with a -2 mod, please]
Knot tying station: Jasmine
"Good idea." The trainer approved. "Now I'll tell you a bit on how to place the snare. These snares should be placed with channelization. To build a channel, construct a funnel-shaped barrier extending from the sides of the trail toward the trap, with the narrowest part nearest the trap. Channelization should be inconspicuous to avoid alerting the prey."
The trainer knelt on the ground and began to use his hands to scoop dirt; beginning to form a funnel.
"Here, join me. Now people may think this is a game trail if they aren't well versed in traps themselves."
Firemaking station ~ Rory and Femra
"You can provide more oxygen by blowing on it." The trainer offered. "This is a good beginning to a fire." She stated approvingly.
"Now," She gestured for Rory to stand and join her. " - some things are aided by fire, such as visibility in the dark. "
She led Rory to a wooden box where some palm fronds, wood fiber and long sticks were stacked. She reached in and withdrew a completed torch from the bottom of the box.
"You use a long piece of wood for the torch," The woman gestured to it. "- then provide fuel for the fire on the end. This is dried leaves and some wood fiber tied onto the wood. Rope burns well. If you have anything that burns well such as oil; dipping it within would be a great idea."
"Try your hand at making one."
Rory was given free run of the box, where she located long sticks, dried palm fronds, wood timber and a length or rope.
Edible & medicinal plants station ~ Klo
"Well, you've learned some, I hope." The trainer stated. "Is there anything specific that you are curious about? Anything specific you want to know?"
As the last class had so many questions and insight, she looked expectantly to hear what interested Klo.
Knife throwing station ~ Lallek
The trainer watched Lallek as he practiced. His eyes lit up as he recognized something and leaned over to the control panel, hitting a series of buttons. Lallek suddenly realized that the training targets had changed in thier movement. Now the pattern had vanished. He was left with targets that would come up for a minute; just as the one next to it would only pop up for 5 seconds. The times began to drastically shorten, forcing him to make his throws more quickly with less time to worry about leading the moving targets.
"These targets are random." The trainer advised. "Work on your instincts - which weighted knife to throw, how far the distance is..."

This new challenge was a bit frustrating, yet was still strangely enjoyable. Back home Lallek threw at barrels, buckets, or if the fishermen were feeling sporty a simple moving rig. If he had this sort of training all along, he would be able to throw like no one else. As the targets fly at random darting up and down Lallek picks up 5 knives and sets them in front of himself.
The targets were dropping quickly and at random. Lallek would have to aim lower, catching the targets as the dropped. In a flurry he threw. It was the fastest he had moved so far. Some hit solidly most just got lucky in the toss. A few he almost timed incorrectly, but there were no misses and he felt proud of that at least.
Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 2,6,6,5,5,1,3,9 (1 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 3,10,5,7,7,4,2,3,9 (2 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 6,1,9,4,10,8,3,10,5,1 (4 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 1,1,1,10,8,10,7,2,6,6 (3 successes) Lallek rolled 8 dice to "Dex+Athletics-3" 5,8,9,5,6,5,6,6 (2 successes)

Rory Noland: District 7 Female Tribute @ Fire Making station
Rory admits quietly to herself that she is actually having fun. The tiny little tree squirel was always very fond of school. She thristed for knowledge, trying learn anything and everything. This was just two fun.
She gets a weird look on her face. One of determination as she sets to make herself a torch. She makes mental notes along the way, reminding herself of what the trainer had conveyed to her. After a few minutes, Rory holds up an unlit torch. It is made from one of the long sticks with a rope wrapped tightly around one end. There are also some dried palm fronds sticking out of the top. "A torch with rope will probably burn faster then one made of just the palm fronds... Or at least that's my guess. So I thought I'd use both."
