Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeCade had taken more damage than Femra who had just exploded into a cloud of ash. Poor little Femra. Don’t think for a second Rory had forgotten how she failed her. But that wasn’t important. What was important was ending this fight as quickly as possible. People we’re getting hurt. Her people. The people that Rory Noland, the volunteer from District Seven, swore to protect and defend with her life if necessary. The Fallen Career had to have an off switch just like Femra. Rory just had to find it. She began to eye his lumbering corpse for anything out of the ordinary; his district token, the bits of viscera that fell away in chucks, anything. Somewhere in the back of Rory’s mind she knew that she should be tending to Jasmine, or helping Rowan get away. But turning Cade to dust and ending this fight was more important. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Perception Check" 6,7,3,9,10,9,10,2 (4 successes)

Scouring the dead tribute's body, a glimmer of gold caught Rory's eye. It was not on his chest as a locket as Femra's had been, but just peeking out of bottom hem of Cade's shirt. The token was a small sword pendant, the details of the hilt being the emblem of Cade's district inlaid with gold. During Cade's life, the token had been rivited to Cade's sword belt. Due to the damage Cade had taken before death, it seemed the Gamemakers had tied the leather of the belt - with the glittering token- right onto the Avenged Cade's shirt hem. Taking it could be accomplished by cutting or tearing the Avenged Cade's shirt itself, as no doubt that leather would be tough to cut.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u] Jasmine cradled the locket in ash touched hand. She quickly shoved it into her pocket and turned away from the smear that was the Avenged Femra as it washed down the mountainside. Even the corpse turning to dust and ash fit into her delusion of dreaming. She shoved the token into a pocket, staring hard through the pelting rain at the dessicated corpse that was Cade. She was searching for the career's District Token. And the glittering by his belt in the form of a sword must be it. She darted around, bow gripped tight, for fear that letting it go now that she might not be able to pick it up again later. "Rowan, Rory, Tank! Nab his token, or get it away from him. It's how I brought down Femra!" She shouted through the cacophony of rain. "His is on 'is shirt 'em. Looks bound by leather..." She darted in, long legs carrying her close, and possibly right into harm's way, but this would end the nightmare if she nabbed it. But it slipped through her fingers as she failed to get solid purchase of the trinket. Perception: 10,1,4,7,3,4 (1 successes) Sleight of Hand: 5,9,1,7,3,5 (1 successes)

As Jasmine's fingers brush the token and come away, Avenged Cade shrieks in anger. You have to fight the urge to cover your ears as that unearthly, wordless shout of rage reverberates down the mountain. You wonder if other tributes heard that. Or maybe that large cat mutt. Then you are forced to stop thinking about the future and focus on the present as Avenged Cade demonstrates a terrible new ability he had never demonstrated before. One of the shorter spikes on his hands is shot forward, narrowly missing Rowan's head. It implants itself in the cave side with tremoundous force, splintering rock. Cade's right hand swings around towards Rowan. The shaft shoots forward at Rowan, implanting firmly in the girl's right side. Rowan mades a gasp before losing her balance, crashing forward to land on the wet mountainside floor. Rowan is still conscious, but drops her axe to the ground. Both hands grip the spike in her side, her hands becoming slick with blood. 2012-08-23 00:16:59 Avenged Cade rolled 7 dice to "Shooting Rowan (Enraged double attack)" 7,10,1,1,3,10,7,5,5 (2 successes)

Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeThis ends now...Rory nodded when Jasmine shouted. The district seven tribute had killed Cade the first time it was only fitting that she do it this time... She hoped. This could be a trick. The Gamemakers were cruel and unkind. But there was nothing she could do about that. Rory had to act fast. Her eyes widen when Cade shrieked. It was a horrifying sound. And then everything slowed down. Rory saw Cade shoot out that spike and she stopped. It had come within inches of her and stab Rowan in the side. Someone was yelling, and Rory was pretty sure it was her. She brought up her axe and took a swipe at his midsection. Rory Noland rolled 9 dice to "Turn Cade off" 10,9,7,3,9,5,4,8,3,2 (4 successes)

Tank switched priorities in a heartbeat, dashing away from Cade as Rory yelled out and grabbing his medkit from where he had left it moments before the abominations with Femra and Cade's likenesses had shown up, sliding to a stop on his knees next to Rowan. "It's okay, I'm here..." Tank surveyed the damage done to Rowan's side. They wouldn't lose her, not when they'd come so far... Tank rolled 7 dice to "Assessing Injury" 10,7,2,10,9,5,10,4,4,7 (4 successes)

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u]
Jasmine shied away from Cade as he uttered that unearthly screech. She felt it down in her core and she staggered a step back as something glittered through the rain and the Cade-doll-zombie stiffened just as Femra had. The nightmare was heading to a crashing end. And Jasmine was thankful, ready to wake from it, and hopefully forget it.
Though, it didn't. A frown spread over her features as she frantically looked around. Rory still standing, the dark smear where Femra was, Tank crouched over someone on the ground. Why wasn't it ending... why wasn't she waking with friends around her in the cave.
Someone on the ground... She shuddered, eyes glazing as she took a step toward Tank. No Rowan standing anywhere... Tank crouched over someone.
"NO..no..nonononono..." She started loud, and quickly dribbled off, eyes going wide and frantic. She'd been so strong, but... She'd killed Femra, again, and Rowan was down and Sorrel was with someone else and Rory... Rory... "No... no... Not now... wake up, Jazzy... Wake up Jasmine..."
She stumbled a step closer and sank down to her knees by Rowan's feet.

The token swings from Rory's hand, catching in the moonlight. Avenged Cade shudders, that terrible shout finally ending. The corspe falls to the ground, disintergrating in large chunks of ash. The rain does its cleansing work, washing the dead down the mountainside. Now the tributes are left to deal with the aftermath. Rowan lays at the mouth of the cave, clutching at her bleeding side.
Tank realizes that three inches of the steel spike has entered Rowan's side. He could remove it, perform surgery - a bit risky, with these conditions - but Rowan would have a better chance of surviving. Or he could remove the spike, stitch her flesh closed and hope that it would recover with the antibiotics alone, and not risk the surgery. It was a terrible decision.
"I didn't do so well, did I?" Rowan asks, reading Tank and Jasmine's expressions.

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
She was swearing up a storm by the end of the fight. The polite, honorable teenage lowering herself out of anger. Rory was tired and she wanted nothing more than to go home. But she couldn't, not yet. There was so much more that needed be done.
"No... no... Not now... wake up, Jazzy... Wake up Jasmine..."
Jasmine's scared voice stopped Rory in mid-rant. Her gaze shifted to her alliance mates. Rory rushed to them, knelt next to Jasmine, pulled her close and began to rock her. "Jasmine... It's okay... It's gonna be okay."
But it wasn't. It wasn't going to be okay.
When Rowan spoke Rory picked her head, her eyes watering. "You did great, Ro. And as soon as we stitch you up, we gonna win, and we're gonna go home. You'll get to tell this story to your grandkids..."
She met Tank's gaze. "Do whatever it takes, Tank. I'll help you. Just tell me what I need to do."

"Bastard got in a lucky shot." Tank muttered, unfurling both his medical kits as he took stock of what was in each one and what he would need for what he was about to attempt.
"Rory, gonna need your help on this one." Tank stated firmly, running through the procedure in his mind as he assessed Rowan's condition. Her vitals were thankfully intact, but the internal bleeding was life-threatening by itself. He could leave the healing to nature, patch up Rowan's wound and rely on the antibiotics in the medkit to do their job, but that would guarantee Rowan two days at best without further supplies, assuming they worked.
Option B was riskier with greater reward - do the surgery himself right here right now. If things went right, Rowan would stand a greater chance of survival. If not... Tank didn't even want to think about it. It all came down to one thing... just how good Tank actually was. There would be no luxury of freezing up and coming back to it later... once he started down this course, he would have to see it through to the end.

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u]
Jasmine reached out with one shaky hand and put it on Rowan's boot, then was enveloped by Rory. Stone... Jasmine was Rory's stone. She whimpered and looped an arm around her friend. Her surviving friend, and sobbed into her shoulder. Hot tears in the cold, mountain rain.
Her stone... but Jasmine felt cracked. Killing people... that was easy. Grieving for them? That was hard. She'd been hard for her family when they grieved for Nomad. She'd cried on her own, in her own time. Now... it was different. She sobbed, and barely heard Rowan's question, and Rory's response.
She knew it wasn't going to be okay. She'd shot people... people like Emerald. Emerald hadn't gotten up... she'd been dying when Jasmine put the knife to her and now Rowan seemed the same.
"This... this wassa supposed tuh be a dream..." she snuffled, "Dead ain't s'posed to walk 'gain. Dead s'posed to stay dead..."
Stone. Rory's Stone. Jasmine loosed her grip on Rory. She needed to get a hold of herself. Pull herself together... the nightmare was continuing because it was real. The games were still going on and... Rowan was dying.
Time to be strong... in a moment.

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
Rory held on to Jasmine as she cried. She was her stone, but even stone cracks. And Jasmine needed her right now, more than she needed Jasmine. She'd need to be the rock, the lynchpin, whatever they needed, their lives depended on Rory morphing herself into that.
"Whatever you need, Tank." Rory replied, she kissed Jasmine on the top of her head and smoothed her hair back. "I know, Jazz. But it's not a dream, and we need you. We need you to be there for Rowan. I need you to be stone. As hard as a rock... But I don't need you to do that for me. I need you to be that for Rowan."
Rory let go and moved to assist Tank. She took off her belt and rolled it up. "Ro, bite down on this... It'll help. And Jazz don't let go of her hand. No matter what happens don't let go."

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female
Jasmine felt Rory go. Listened to her words. The words Jasmine'd been thinking. She took one shuddering breath, knowing her shivering wasn't being induced by the rain, however cold and soaked through to the bone she was becoming. She watched Rory move to help Tank.
Rowan needed her too. Needed her to be strong. She needed to be strong. This was her family in the Arena... She couldn't fail them. She wiped her cheeks, not that the tears she'd been crying before would have been seen anyways, and shook her head to what Rory said. "Not not... Inna sec..." She scooped her bow up from where she'd dropped it when she sank to her knees by Rowan's feet and moved into the cave. She gathered up a few things, hastily, scattering a few of their supplies as she did so. She added the arrows she and Rory's made to her quiver, if something had heard Cade's death knell, she might need them sooner rather than later, as well as the gamemaker arrow Rowan had collected from Rye's dead corpse. Last she grabbed her flashlight and the tarp. It might make them a beacon on the side of the mountain, but Tank couldn't work in the dark, unless there was something special Jasmine didn't know about the big tribute.
She came back out and hastily threw the tarp over the three who needed a dry...ish work environment and slid the lit flashlight under the tarp.
"I'll... I'll... be 'kay. Someone needs tuh stand watch while yuh two save 'er..." she murmured and crouched by Rowan's feet again, one hand moving out to rest on her calf. It wouldn't be as good as holding her hand, but it would let her know that Jasmine wasn't abandoning her.

The hasty environment set up to go, Tank got to work. Tank rolled 11 dice to "Surgery #1" 5,8,8,10,5,3,5,1,3,8,3,10,6 (5 successes) Tank rolled 11 dice to "Surgery #2" 10,9,9,8,1,8,5,6,8,2,6,10,4 (7 successes) Tank rolled 11 dice to "Surgery #3" 7,5,1,7,8,6,5,2,1,5,7 (1 successes) Tank rolled 11 dice to "Surgery #4" 3,4,4,3,4,1,1,8,3,5,6,4,9,6 (1 successes) Tank rolled 17 dice to "Surgery #5" 8,9,8,1,9,7,4,2,7,9,7,1,8,2 (7 successes)
So much blood... her blood was on his hands, her life was in his hands too... Rory's aid was invaluable as he handed out instruction after instruction, the female tribute following them one after the other as they fought to save Rowan's life. The minutes ticked past all too quickly as the wound was painstakingly closed, the offending stake tossed as far as Tank could throw after determining it was just that with no hidden surprises within. Five hours passed before Tank finally disinfected and sutured the last of Rowan's injury, sitting back and reassessing her condition as he finished. Sweat poured off his forehead as the stress of the whole procedure hit him all at once, the relief of having finally evident on his face. The medkit so graciously given at the Feast was over half-depleted now, but it had been worth it. "M'done..." Tank muttered, feeling more exhausted than he had done since the entire ordeal of the Games had started.

Rowan lay spent and drenched in sweat, shuddering with chills of stress. Yet she was breathing steadily and her chest was rising in steady breaths. Her eyes fluttered open for barely a breath before her eyes slid shut again. She was sinking into slumber, a sleep that would recharge and rejuvenate her for as far as Tank could tell, the surgery was a success. The night was deepening into a black gloom, the rain continuing to fall. Would it be a relief from the fight or would the stench of blood bring on new terrors...

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
The surgery was long and there were times that Rory thought she was going to lose it. After all, she wasn’t a medic. She was a tiny lumberjack.
Five hours passed, though it seemed like it was more like 5 years. Rory pushed through. Whatever Tank need, Rory was by his side. She glanced at Jasmine once or twice to make sure that she was still with them.
And once the surgery was done, Rory didn’t smile. "Can we move her?" She looked between Tank and Jasmine. "You both need sleep… If we can move Rowan, I’ll clean up the cave and keep watch again."

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u]
Jasmine stood watch the entire surgery, every now and again dropping her hand to pat Rowan's calf or boot, but never turning to peek under the tarp and check how the surgery was going. Her duty, right now, was to put an arrow into the face of anything that was coming to disturb them.
As the hours wore on, she continued to wait and watch, ever vigilant. When the tarp was lifted, after what seemed a lifetime, and Tank and Rory emerged victorious, Jasmine felt as though a weight was lifted from her shoulders. She was glad that she didn't need to collect a second token tonight...
The brief thought sent a shadow across her face, that she quickly steadied and pushed away. "We oughta bring her inside at least... the wet and the rain out 'ere can't be doin' 'er any good..."
While she spoke and made statements, she looked to Tank for confirmation. He was their healer, their medic, and he'd have final say as far as Jasmine was concerned. She looked away, back to Rory. "Huh uh, I've 'ad 'nough sleep fer the moment... if'n someone's standin' guard... I can keep it up."

"With any luck the rain will wash the blood and the smell of it away..." Tank sighed.
"She is bandaged but moving her runs the risk of breaking the stitches... we could use a tarp like a stretcher but we do not want to drop her if we do. We'll need a clean, quick relocation to the cave."

Rory Noland: District Seven Female TributeRory almost laughed when Jasmine spoke. Her rock would follow her into certain death but when it came to keeping Rory sane and well rested, Jasmine wouldn't listen to an order that jeopardize that. Rory wouldn't say it now. But should she ever lay dying or they managed to get out of this hell, Rory wouldn't let her friend, her sister-in-arms, go another day without knowing how much her support helped her in the arena. "Fine," Rory said, with a nod. "But we're both cleaning up the cave and then I'll sleep. Promise."She looked down at Rowan and then scanned the area around them. From the frown on her face it was obvious Rory was thinking about their next series of moves. She couldn't see much in the rain but maybe there were sticks big enough to fashion something for Rowan. "Okay, first things first. We need to get Rowan inside. The next few days are crucial, right?" Rory looked at Tank when she said that. He wasn't a genius but he knew more about healing than Rory did so in this case he was the leader. "The cave needs to be as spotless as we can get it. It'll only help. Until Rowan's on her feet we'll have to stay here. Which means while it's raining we'll start collecting water. We've got that stove we can boil it without making smoke. Then we'll have to rig this whole area around us. We're going to be here for days. And at least two people know where we are... They might not be coming for us but I don't want to take chances." Rory looked around once more. "I'll fashion something that'll make it easier to lift Rowan, safely." And with that Rory got to work. Rory Noland rolled 6 dice to "Wit+Comp" 5,6,5,5,10,6,6 (1 successes) [Didn't know if I needed it but it's there] Rory Noland rolled 8 dice to "Wits+Crafts" 8,1,8,3,7,10,7,6,8 (4 successes)

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u]
Jasmine was glad that Rory wasn't going to argue with her about the resting issue. Rory needed sleep too, and Tank for that matter. And Jasmine didn't think that sleep on her end right now would help a whole lot. She wouldn't admit it to anyone, but she was afraid she'd drift off right into a nightmare repeating the events of the night.
She watched Rory disappear into the sheet of rain, and likewise went into the cave, clearing enough of a place for Rowan to be laid down. She'd clean it proper like after they brought her inside.
A moment later she'd returned to find Rory putting together a makeshift stretcher. Jasmine was more than willing to admit that was a good idea. It'd make moving Rowan easier. She stowed her new bow and helped move Rowan, gently, to the stretcher, and then into the cave and out of the steady rain. She set to tidying things up, moving their supplies from the scattered nature she'd caused when hastily getting the tarp and putting them into neat little piles.
When she declared it done, she moved to the mouth of the cave. Scouting now might end up getting her lost in the rain. "Rory... If'n you've gotta moment 'fore bed... I wanna talk 'bout our plans."

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
As soon as they got Rowan inside it, Rory began to feel how tired she was. She didn't remove her armor as she went to help Jasmine clean up their makeshift shelter. Jasmine worked on getting the waterskins, food, clothes, weapons, and equipment in neatly arranged piles for easy access, while Rory cleared enough space for two of them to sleep comfortably. One person would stand watch and there were enough for three shifts. That would ensure they got some kind of rest.
When they were finished, Rory nodded at Jasmine and followed her out, telling Tank, "Rest up. You've earned it."
As they got to the mouth of the cave, Rory paused. "Hold on."
Rory went out into the rain again. This time she search for the gold glint that was Cade's distinct token, when she found it Rory she picked it up. If she won, Rory wanted to make sure Cade's family got this back. It'd be the least she could do, after all it was Rory that killed him.
As she walked back inside, Rory removed her helmet and placed it outside, doing the same with the one they took from Klo. Then she sat down next to Jasmine peering out into the blackness. They didn't need to look at each other to talk. Besides, more of those things might be out there and Rory wanted to be ready this time.
"So, you want to talk..."

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11 Female[/u]
Jasmine nodded. She wanted to talk and what she wanted to talk about wasn't exactly an easy topic. She stared out into the dark rain. It seemed to reflect her mood and the stains to her soul she felt adding up.
"We need-a talk 'bout what we're gonna do next..." she said just loud enough to be heard over the downpour. "Rowan ain't good... Better'n' Nomad..." her voice died for a moment at the mention of her brother. Her brother hadn't had allies like the District 7 tributes. "Better than Nomad was when he was hurt bad at the end o'is run... But... we can't move 'er... We got th' high ground here an' we can make sure tha' anyone not comin' up th'way we want 'em to meets a nasty surprise 'er two..."
She paused a moment. She was recommending digging in. At least for the time being. They also needed to talk about what to do about Rowan if she took a turn for the worst... but that was a topic for later. "Rory... I... I'm sorry fer loosin' it... earlier..."

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
Rory was quiet for a moment. The weight on her shoulders was getting heavy. But she reminded herself of her promise. She'd see that Rowan got back. For Cedar. She wondered what her district thought about all this. Were they proud? Did they think she was naive? Were they worried for Rowan, for her, for Tank? And what of Jasmine's district? Sorrell was still alive. Was District 11 divided?
She glanced at Jasmine for a moment, just a split second and reached out for her hand. Rory held it and gave it a squeeze. Rory's way of telling her she was here for her. "I know. I was going to suggest the same thing. We should lay traps on the low ground too. And build some kind of barriers one in front of the cave to block arrow fire, and two on the sides to for us."
She took a deep breath and let it out. "You've got nothing to be sorry for. Everyone has their limits. And those things were horrifying."
Rory smiled, weakly. "The next couple of days are going to be hard. But it's almost over... I can feel it."

Jasmine Coverfield, District 11[/u]
As silly as it might be that a little bit of compassion such as having her hand taken by a friend, sister, and a little squeeze. It did a lot to help her morale and her confidence. They were going to make it. Rowan was going to make it. They'd all go home... and if Sorrel were still out there, Jasmine hoped to convince her to join her.
She just wished Odin were still alive to join them as well. Jasmine refused to think about the fact the Gamemakers had yet to utter just how many people constituted an alliance.
She gave Rory's hand a squeeze and withdrew it back to close to her quiver. While she didn't like the separation, she wanted to be able to get an arrow out in a hurry.
"It is," Jasmine agreed quietly. One way or another, the end was closing in. "Maybe we can rig some sort-a landslide fer unlucky ***holes who come seekin' us."

Rory Noland: District Seven Female Tribute
The tribute from district seven, the girl who volunteered did not think she'd make it this far. And win or lose, in the next couple of days it'd be over. And win or lose, Rory more than proved she wasn't a Capitol Puppet. Not by a long shot.
When Jasmine withdrew, Rory picked up her axe, holding it at her side. She nodded. "A landside could work so long as we can control it. Maybe put it in key places in front of us. Then use some of those arrows we made."
A smirk graced Rory's features. "We'll make more arrows tomorrow while we have the light. And start setting up the traps. If we can find a good set of trees we'll be able to make a lookout post. It'll be where you and I take watch during our shifts. I have a feeling if anyone if coming they'll do it at night. Which means we might have to rig something that would light torches near the bottom. I don't know if we'll be able to do it. But it's worth a try."
